Folks,

i'm considering starting a zero to hero course in the USA.

I have considered it long and very hard and have found one school that will do all for a really great price <€30,000 ex accom and living exp

Module 1-7 is in the US and Module 8 is done in the UK

the course includes the following and a MCC is an option but I think i will do the MCC in Dublin with a different school to get some home turf education;


Module 1 - FAA Part 141 Private Pilot, Night Qual & RT

36 Hours Aircraft Rental (including Rental for FAA Practical Test)
25 Hours Flying Instructor Services (Dual Instruction)
35 Hours Ground Instructor Services (Ground School)

Other then MCC is there anything that i should consider that will get me to interview stage?

Have you looking into your medical yet ? The one up in the Mater was a pain in the arse, I finally passed it but cost me near 1k altogether. Also with these zero - hero plans. Be careful with the school you choose, Also never pay up front and even though it says 30k. I can imagine at least another 10-15k on top for the hidden costs and expenses. Then if all goes well and you want to stay in Ireland its going to be another near 30k just to fly with ryanair. Its not an easy road as I'm finding out, But it is enjoyable at times :)

If you do this in minimum hours, you won't, but you never know, you will be some way short of 200 hours total. This is a requirement for JAA CPL issue, not to sure about the EASA rules.
A blue book will not get you a interview, there are lots of wannabe zombies out there with just that.
So you will have to fork out for a rating and hours on type. That will make you very unpopular on here.
Best of luck, you will need it. Just one thing, why are you going the FAA route?
I can understand it for the ppl, I have one, but why the rest?

The company you are looking at, don't have a base at Leeds Bradford airport, the IR is done there.
Have you looked at Aviation Services UK, Leeds Bradford Airport | Multiflight (http://www.multiflight.co.uk) ?

They have a very good reputation, unlike the school you are considering.
I would do a search if I were you.

Cheers for the help, I was under the impression the FAA PPL then JAA approved sylabus was the right route for IRL/UK/rest of europe CPL flying?? please excuse my ignorance!! :sad: then plus a MCC in IRL for home exp would be a good idea

36+50+22.5+53.5+10+8+11+5 =201hrs

I know it is bang on minimum and should expect to pay for some adtional hrs to make up for my ability...

Any suggestions as to an alt school?

trying my best to keep loans to a minimum i'm 27 with negitive equity around my neck!

I'm planning on heading off to start in Jan-12

That's a long list. It may be worth double checking the quoted course figures - for example I add that up to an 18 hour JAA CPL, rather than the 25 required for a SECPL or 28 for a MECPL. Also be aware that EASA propose in the not too distant future to remove the MECPL route, by not allowing candidates to complete an extra class rating as part of the CPL.

I thought about jacking in my job and doing one of these full time modular courses( half the price of integrated, seems like a sensible descision) then realized.... Theres a good chance that I'm gonna need my job back for quite some time after I qualify anyway.

Train part time, keep your job. Take advantage of the (relative) freedom that the modular route offers. Reducing risks all important.

The MEP Rating will continue to exist - it is a Class Rating and not a Licence. The "MECPL" simply refers to doing an approved CPL course including MEP Rating training, culminating in a CPL test in a MEP aircraft which will double as your Class Rating Test. EASA therefore proposes to remove the option to combine a CPL course with a MEP Rating course. You would still be able to take a CPL test in a MEP aircraft but you must hold the MEP Rating itself before doing the course. I would suspect the majority of people will continue to do a CPL in a SEP aircraft, then MEP Rating, then MEIR.
