Slight aviation link - Went to see Mr Dickinson and Co at the NIA in Birmingham last night - Absolutely fantastic performance, great to see so much energy and enthusiasm on display after all these years.

Also delighted to hear BD announce that the band will continue for years to come.

True Rock Royalty.

As one who dabbles with standing up in front of sparse crowds in pubs waving guitars around, I can see the deeply ingrained quality of the musicians in that band.

Can't stand the music like, but I know a bunch of skilled axe mongerers when I see them. Good luck to them.

I won't pretend to be heavy metal enthusiast (I'm a Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler man) but I kept an open mind when I took an 18-year old Godson, a committed Iron Maiden fan, to the O2 last night. I was impressed, very impressed!

We were warmed up with a spectacular light-show (definitely not for epileptics!), album video clips and lots of sci-fi theatrics before Bruce Dickinson bounced (literally) onto the stage - setting the pace he kept up for two hours. He's only a few years younger then me and there were times when I felt breathless just watching him. He certainly knows how to work an audience - 15,000 people in the palm of his hand from beginning to end.

Songs from their latest album (not to be their last, despite the title) were greeted with howls of enthusiastic approval (and much hand/finger-pointing, which I learnt is part of the ritual) and, when they played some old favourites, the entire arena erupted into an ocean of waving arms with 15,000 fans singing along. Very skilful guitar solos with intricate riffs won loud roars of appreciation throughout the night.
Seeing the Maiden (as I've now learnt to call them) performing live was truly an experience. Godson says they won the Brit Award for Best British Live Act in 2009; I'm not surprised.

BTW, it's Dr Dickinson now.

Bruce was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music a few weeks ago, by Queen Mary University London, in recognition of his contributions to the music industry. He graduated with a history degree from Queen Mary in 1979. Honorary degree awarded to rock star (http://www.qmul.ac.uk/media/news/items/52659.html)

Its a crazy world. He will be able to carry on being the singer in a heavy metal band years after he has to stop being a commercial pilot.
