Aviation Art:Drover & PC12 RFDS

Acrylic on stretched canvas. 20cm x 25cm. The time difference between these two aircraft is 50 years. In half a century,just think of the advances in aircraft,medical technology,navigation,communication,power plants & speed. Makes you wonder what the next 50 years will bring.

Yes. I did a series of 4 medical aircraft. The 1st two,Queenair & B200, I put on a few days ago (I see that is now on page 2),so these are the last two of the series. The next lot I'm currently working on are 4 night freighters.

"AE" whilst I agree we have come a long way in 50 yrs (medicine etc) but not really that far in aviation. Sure the motive force has changed by way of reliability & power output but the power plants are still fossil fuel burning devices so in actual fact we have changed nothing in that sector of air travel. As for A/C design? Well sure they have changed from two wings to one wing mainly the biggest change with modern methods of assembly etc but these days the machines are just the same as the old ones. They still require fwd motion over an aerofoil to create lift so in essence we have progressed very little since the Wright Bros started it all off:).
Okay I know some will say what drugs I am on but in a nut shell we still fly subsonic (commercially mostly) in the lower levels of the earths atmosphere in machines that are driven by man that require the same fuel as a 100 yrs ago (fossil) still need a rwy & still get effected by the WX & can still fall out of the sky despite all the CRM rubbish, the Modern technology & expert training.

The next 50 years as you wonder?...........well prolly won't have achieved much more at all other than ruin what was once an exciting prosperous industry.:sad:
But as for yr paintings? Well they will live on in museums with small boys & girls in the distant future saying to their parents whilst looking at them............daddy that machine they called way back then the PC12 why does it only have one antiquated engine??, wasn't that dangerous?:E

I notice no scenery in these, a different approach indeed.

Yes Wally,what you say is true,but,I totally respect the pilots flogging around in them old airyplanes. Way out in the mulga,out of radio coms,no mobile phone,no GPS,sparse maps & using Mark 1 eyeballs to find isolated homesteads:eek:

Jaba. The background in many aviation paintings tends to overwhelm the main focal point,so these plain backgrounds make the a/c really stand out. Of course I still remember how to do backgrounds.

All good there "AE" respect, yep & I also bow to those that flew such old machines on missions out in the middle of nowhere:ok: I think a painting depicting an old Drover for Eg flying low over some homestead with ominous clouds in the background just on dusk shows that respect in ever detail, yr paintings command respect, you show it in yr amazing work & the beholders eyes can only wonder:ok:

Aye Ess, a couple of very nice paintings showing how the RFDS has moved backwards from a nice reliable and safe multi engine aircraft to one of those single engine widdowmakers.:E

The Drover is illustrated in its Mk3 guise, post '61 lycoming upgrade, but before the Mk3a mod to the tailplane. this aircraft was a Mk 1, 1f, 2, 3 and 3a progressively I think. Did it ever make Mk3b? (increased MTOW)

Harley, not sure of the Mk3b. I tried to follow all the Mk changes but there's a lot to understand. In 50years aeroplanes have changed SO much. If a Drover lost just 1 engine,often it meant it had to land whereas if the PC12 loses one it ...um,well....OK,bad example,but the point is; the PC12 is WAAAY more colourful than the Drover (insert awkward emoticon here)

...And I reckon the PC12 must fly an aweful lot faster and better without all those engine thingies hanging off the wings and messing up the airflow! :E

Did the RFDS Drovers originally have Gypsy Queens?

One could just see Captain Wally heading off out of Essendon to Mildura in the trusty Drover on a 40 degree day, stiff Northerly blowing on a Med1 flight!

...........now now "S8" lets not be too cheeky buddy we all know Capt Wally only ever used Med 1 when he was on a promise that night, ATC always helped with me luv-life & they didn't even know it, thanks guys:ok::ok:

Would loved to have flown something like the old Drover.......................but as that saying goes in the movie "Australia".............'the bloody drover':E

The Drover engine up to the Mk3 is the Gipsy Major 10Mk2.

The Queen has 6 cylinders and is best found on the Rapide/Dove/Heron.
