Insurance companies premium are based on drivers age and experience. Is that also true in aviation?

I would think it would be by pilots' flight time, Total Time and Time on Type. You can be a 45 year old pilot, but with only 200 hours TT (late starter) ... see my point?

Insurers usually accept that airlines have minimum standards and experience levels and don't impose any restrictions on pilots due to age etc. they allow the airlines to be self regulating in this respect.

On the other hand if you are talking about small operations with just a few aircraft, particularly single crew aircraft, then insurers may well impose what they call a 'Pilot Warranty' that will stipulate minimum acceptable experience and are likely to exclude from cover altogether inexperienced pilots of any age rather than require an increased premium.
