It was interesting in today's The West Australian to see Qantas run a full page advert saying along the lines of

"Because it's always safety first"

We're sorry to everyone whose journey has been disrupted. But with the volcanic ash cloud, we won't fly unless we are sure you will be safe in the air.

Does anyone else think this is just a PR spin to try and counter act all the negative publicity the group has experianced over the past couple of months?

An email from Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce to the airline's eight million frequent flyer customers, justifying Qantas' decision to ground many of its aircraft, implied that airlines like Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia were operating unsafely, Mr Fyfe said.

"What Alan omitted to mention was that it wasn't just Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia that had managed to adapt their operations to operate safely in clear air, but all airlines apart from Qantas and Jetstar had managed to achieve the vast majority of their operations.

"What Alan also failed to mention was that Qantas was very happy to transfer thousands of its customers onto Air New Zealand and other airlines' services, which seems a strange thing to do for your customers if you have concerns about the safety of the airspace."

For the life of me I cannot understand these decisions to ground flts on various grounds due to "safety concerns" (and the money that they waste in doing so) when they then go and make, what I believe, are rediculous decisions on maintenance and flt crew outsourcing that costs alot less and has such a huge impact to safety (as we have seen to date).

I believe that grounding the A380 and AKL ops was and is a necessity, don't get me wrong, but in contrast to other safety related decisions makes no sense for a company always boasting a "commitment to safety".

I believe it's a PR spin. They have been clobbered in the press lately due to the number of incidents and I think they are trying to save face.

Soon to be announced, Qantas is to ground all flights as "safety is always first, and flying has too many risks associated with it..."

Qantas Group did what they thought was right and thats what you would expect.

Likewise ANZ, VA and the RAAF amongst others. Did Virgin write to all its FF and take a full page ad out trying to discredit its opposition? Nup. Not a word didn't mention them. AJ has been harping on for weeks on this one and he is just making a fool of himself.

Amateur hour at its best. Its vintage Joyce-Buchanan-Wirth, they're embarrassing 35,000 talented and loyal employees.

Joyce is a highly insecure fellow. 65% of the domestic market and a 500 million dollar profit and he lowers his standard over and over again. Dixon at least had a bit of humility and a touch of style. Wheres James Strong when you need him?

I mean really Virgin are absolutely no threat at all its very obvious to just about everybody including JB himself.

Did they mean to say if we fly lower we don't make as much because we use more fuel so instead we cancel all flights and blame it on the boogy cloud? :8

Perhaps it is all part of the master plan to bankrupt the airline so they can finally 'deal' with those annoying unions & get all employees on JetStar rates, or lower!

I can't ever remember any airline ever publishing a justification for its operational decisions?

Go back 20 odd years, QF, Ansett or any other significant Australian operator would simply have got on with operating under the prevailing conditions, be that grounding all operations or whatever. It was good, old fashioned airmanship.

To effectively ask for "forgiveness" is bizarre.

Do you think it became clear how badly they mismanaged the pax, communications etc., post event, that they needed an action to distract the public from their disorganisation? Or, is QF senior management so extremely wobbly on taking the command approach to running their airline they actually are attempting to spin their way out of their own incometence?

For mine, I don't believe anyone will still buy the QF safety-first story anymore. You simply can't have that many recent, successive & significant incidents and still claim safety as your number one priority. CASA needs to take a serious look at the command culture or lack there of at QF.

Safety before schedule.

Not sure who coined the expression - and I don't know if its used the world over or whether its a QF created one, but I know for years it has been primarily used by QF Pilots with a genuine concern for safety. (And possibly on occasion by the odd twit as a convenient excuse)

Now, QFs wonderful marketing and spin/PR (BS) departments are using it with utter contempt - bandying it about at every opportunity. Knowing full well that safety has nothing to do with their motives.

So now, the staff, the public - dare I say "everyone" is getting sick and tired of hearing it, because it is rapidly becoming a meaningless lie.

(Although I still have faith that tech crew don't blurt it out when they are BS'ing :ok: )

Push QANTAS over the edge so that they either go bust or have to be rescued (like Air NZ were) by the taxpayer.
Now flog off the "only profitable bit" - JetStar - to your mates, having sunk all its start-up costs into the mess you've made of QANTAS
Thus leaving the lucky Ozzie taxpayer with a trashed QANTAS Domestic and little or no International, and - best of all
Off we go to manage JetStar, Ka-ching! :\

No one said "sorry" or did anything extra on my 72hour delayed journey home yesterday.

No "sorry" from the call centre's
No "sorry" from the check-in staff
No "sorry" from the lounge/gate staff
No "sorry" from the cabin crew in their messages
No "sorry" from the pilots in their announcements

I know it wasn't any of their decision making but you'd think something might have come down from above to give a little extra to affected passengers.
