Hi there

I am planning a whale watching flight from Bankstown in the next couple of weeks.

The current plan is to head up the VFR lane to the mouth of the Hawkesbury River and head out to sea a bit.

Where are the best places within reasonable flying distance of there? I have checked the wildaboutwales website and it seems the sightings are pretty random. What would be the best flightpath to take to maximise our chances of spotting some? I was thinking up and down the coast for sorta 20 miles or so.

Of course, lifejackets will be worn and the rules about keeping 1,000ft away from them adhered to.

Any advice would be appreciated :)

depart from Wollongong, only 5 miles to the ocean. just as many whales. not so much traffic and CTA.

Yep, have seen whales (aquatic variety) several times when coastal between YWOL and Stanwell Tops.

Highly recommend YWOL as a base for whale-watching flights. Last year I saw hundreds of 'em within 1-2 miles of the shore.
