Hey,

Over the last few years BAE Systems have run an aircraft maintenance apprenticeship at Robin Hood Bay airport. The idea is that they train up aircraft technicians to work alongside the RAF.

Does anyone happen to know if and when they are recruiting for more apprentices this year? This is a fantastic opportunity that I'd hate to miss.

Is there anyone on PPRune that is part of this apprenticeship scheme already? I'd be interested to hear of your experiences so far.

Aircraft Maintenance Trainee Course

BAE Systems are supporting exciting opportunities at RAF bases around East Anglia working on military fast jets.

BAE Systems is offering the opportunity to undergo a rigorous training programme, starting with the completion of a Technical Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering and mechanical hand skills training in workshops and on fast jet aircraft.

As an Aircraft Mechanic Trainee what can you expect?

BAE Systems is working with the RAF on a number of long term contracts maintaining its fleet of fast jet aircraft at RAF bases including:

RAF Coningsby (http://www.raf.mod.uk/RAFconingsby/) (Lincoln)
RAF Cottesmore (http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafcottesmore/) (Rutland)
RAF Marham (http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafmarham/) (Norfolk)

This stage of training will be based at either Robin Hood Airport, near Doncaster or one of the three colleges, Peterborough (http://www.peterborough.ac.uk/), Lincoln (http://www.lincolncollege.ac.uk/) and the College of West Anglia (http://www.col-westanglia.ac.uk/) and usually lasts 8 months. Trainees will then move onto one of the bases to complete their training and gain a range of experience in Aircraft Maintenance.

For those recruited away from the Doncaster area accommodation will be available during the initial training period. Training usually takes about 20 months to complete and on completion, trainees will qualify as a fully fledged Aircraft Mechanic. Building upon this foundation, further opportunities will be available, with the support of BAE Systems, to continue their career in a maintenance capacity or wider engineering opportunities.

As an Aircraft Mechanic Trainee required skills and qualifications will ideally include:
5 GCSE's Grade A-C (or equivalent) including Maths, English and preferably a Science
Hobbies/Interests demonstrating a level of hands on mechanical/electrical aptitude
Good team working and communication skills
Salary

Starting salary as a trainee will be IRO £10,059 rising to £19,129 on verification. Fully operational Technicians are earning up to c£25k and there is a career structure in place which could take trainees to Maintenance Management positions.

Cottesmore? Really? Last time I flew into there, we landed (rotary!) on the grass outside the officers mess, because we could, as the airfield had closed months back due to the Harriers being axed.

Where did you find this information? I have emailed this address a couple of times, and both times they have said that they haven't opened recruitment for this course this year yet, and they don't have a set date for this at the moment....

Well, I tell a lie, I emailed [email protected] as this is what it said on their apprenticeship website and both times they seemed to know what it is I was talking about.

Does anybody know what sort of qualification you can achieve if you successfully complete the Aircraft Maintenance Trainee Course?.

Would you become a fully licensed aircraft engineer?

" Would you become a fully licensed aircraft engineer?"

The short answer to that is.....NO.....there are the, ahem, minor details of a few modules to complete and other minor details such as gaining recorded experience. etc, etc, etc.

Can't blame you for asking....but at times I do wonder as to why the rather basic homework has not been done simply by logging on the the worlds premier regulatory authority and fiscal extraction site..

Nice to see the "recruitment" fraternity are as au fait as ever..do you know where Cottesmore is I wonder, let alone the fact it's no longer operational....a trivial detail of course....
