Advice please on who to ask to find out what an aircraft was which flew over.

Recently I saw an aircraft travelling at pretty high speed and (because their was little or no sound, I make the assumption) very high up. It was basically a reasonably bright white (hint of yellow?) light travelling across the sky from east to west. I didn't notice it untill it was directly overhead when their was a very bright brief white flash, which was enough to light up the surrounding area a little. The light continued to move (I was watching it now) and it (after perhaps 10-15 seconds) flashed again, (but I think less brightly) it continued to move and flashed again after a similar ammount of time although this time definately much less brightly. It continued on its course right up to the horizon so I suspect it was not a satellite (as is was around midnight and presumably Northern England is far south enough to ensure that satellites would move into the earths shadow.

My apologies if this souds a little vague, I will supply more details if required.

Thanks

If it is a commercial airliner and fitted with a suitable transponder you can get details (at the time) by logging on at www.flightradar24.com (http://www.flightradar24.com)

If its not on there it may be military aircraft.

You don't state which part of England you're in, but this site is quite handy for the North of England, in particular the North East:
