Air NZ, Virgin increase Tasman operations

Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia are increasing trans-Tasman travellers’ reach into regional destinations across NZ and Australia, as part of their “new-look” network.
Releasing operational changes yesterday, the carriers said they will connect up to 57 ports across the two countries, creating the “largest ever” Australasian route network.
“Since we received ACCC and MOT approval in December 2010, we have had dedicated teams from both airlines working closely together to optimise the network,” Air New Zealand Group general manager Australasia Airline Bruce Parton said.
"The changes better match capacity to demand and in many instances this means a greater range of flight times by removing ‘wingtip flying’, as well as better connections to domestic Australia and domestic New Zealand flights.”
Among changes, flight schedules across the trans-Tasman have been altered for more convenience, including afternoon/evening as well as morning flights between Brisbane and Wellington and Christchurch while travellers between Queenstown and Sydney will have access to five times weekly flights during the summer peak over the regular two times weekly services.
Flights to and from Wellington and Sydney will also be adjusted from two morning flights a week to double daily services in the morning and afternoon/evening.
“In addition, as indicated last year, we are actively looking at a couple of potential new trans-Tasman routes which we will likely make a decision on before the end of the year,” Mr Parton added.
As previously arranged, Air New Zealand will carry the majority of capacity with approximately 70 percent while Virgin Australia’s Pacific Blue will operate 30 percent of flights.
