Almost certainly not as big a deal as the local 'paper' spoke of. The reporter failed to work the word terror into the report, but managed a 'desperately' crew reference.

If you read every word it seems the flaps possibly refused to extend correctly.
Is a flapless landing such a huge deal in an EMB-195 assuming the runway is long enough?

Well, Embraer should really do something about flaps thing. Quite common occurrence with E190 ...

Had an E190 with a slat skew fault just a couple of days ago. Might be the skew/assymetry sensors being too sensitive. Cleared the fault memory and the thing was fine. However I've been working on them constantly for a year and a half now and that's the first one I've seen with a flap fault.

FRIGHTENED passengers watched on as crew members tried to find a fault in their plane just minutes before it was due to land at Southampton.
Police shut the M27 as the stricken Flybe aircraft circled above the city, while the runway at Southampton Airport was lined with emergency services.
For a simple flapless landing? Why on earth should Plod have needed to shut the M27?

Didn't a Citation 'slide' onto the M27 a while back. Maybe they closed it only for the approach. (Doubtful :hmm: )

Dunno, Beags, I suppose they might have been worried about an overrun if they were landing to the southwest, OTOH if in doubt there's always the simple "'Elf and Safety" excuse to fall back on....

If they were so worried about a potential runway overrun that the M27 was closed, why wasn't it requested they divert to Bournemouth with it's much longer runway?
