5-8208 IL-76MD Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force - IRIAF (ex Iraqi aircraft)

Accident occurred September 22/2009 near Tehran - reported an engine fire and was preparing for an emergency landing - when the 'dome' detached - striking the tail and sending the aircraft out of control.

Video just posted;

Somewhat surprised that the Iranians still have F4s which work . . . .

Tragic accident. This is the aircraft in the video. An ex-Iraqi airborne early warning example flown to Iran in 1991.

Are accidents tragic when they happen to the bad guys?

Hamish,

The Iranians still maintain a large number of US types. Parts have been sourced on the black market for years although the vast majority will have been reverse engineered. The Iranians have been working on a variant of the F-5 that they intend to put into production.

Looking North, yes I would suggest that accidents that happen to the bad guys are indeed worthy of our sympathy. It's the regime that's the issue, not necessarily the individuals within it.

Well put as they serving their country where no doubt they lied to by politicians ............... why does that sound so familiar.

27 years ago the idea of RAF pilots having a beer with Argentinian pilots was laughable
70 years ago the idea of RAF pilots having a beer with Luftwaffe pilots was laughable
200 years ago the idea of UK and US forces having a beer together and fighting together was laughable............course the idea that people would be in the air was laughable

30 years ago it wasn't. In fact the cadets at the RAF College competed for the Argentinian Air Force Sword.

70 years ago the idea of RAF pilots having a beer with Luftwaffe pilots was laughable34 years ago I was standing outside the hangar at Northolt with Joe Kmiecik, admiring the sunset. "Look at those bastards!" said Joe, pointing at the two Luftwaffe aircraft parked on Southside, "What was it all about, eh?" And he mounted his Honda C50 and rode off to the mess, where presumably he'd run into the crews.

Its almost Orwellian when you think Allies today, enemies tomorrow........then again Iranian air force allies 33 years ago, now who knows......

What about a Libyan tank crew suffering a bad road accident and getting killed? Tragic?

Getting killed 30 seconds before an RAF bomb lands on them? Still tragic?

Let's face it one more AEW asset removed from the IRIAF inventory just makes the next big Gulf scrap an easier job. No crocodile tears being shed here.

The 3 Canberra Sqdns at Akrotiri in 1963 were assigned to CENTO, at the time Iran was a member of CENTO and I ventured through Tehran on my way to a detachment to Pakistan, another CENTO member!

Happy Daze.
