The best magazine for commercial flying is Flight International. For Military, just read these pages (and Military forum). And for private, well try Flyer or Pilot. They are both quite good. I would suggest through that the private pilots magazines are only of interest if you are a PPL, since they seem to be written for this audience (eg flying x-country, short field landing techniques). Its useful if you do fly, but quite boring if you don't.
You will find that most of the abbriviations stand for very boring things, and its not worth the stress trying to find out what they stand for.

A couple of suggestions:

The “Air Disaster” series of books by Macarthur Job describe aircraft accidents and investigations in a very readable and accessible way, and would be ideal for the layman. Each book also has a pretty comprehensive glossary, which will demystify a lot of terms and abbreviations for you.

Microsoft Flightsim (don’t s******) can actually be a useful piece of kit. The instruction manuals are highly detailed, and if you can find an add-on book, it should introduce you to all the basic aircraft instruments and controls.

And if all else fails, you could always ask on here!

I don't believe it - it blanked out 'sn1gger'!! <img src="rolleyes.gif" border="0">

Look in the Wannabes Archive Forum for good basic info. In their you will find a thread by myself listing loads of abbreviations.

This link might work:

The Wannabes Archive are at the very bottom of the forum FLightdeck page.

Good luck,
