Help! Need decent file recovery software

Evening all,

Could any of you kind PPruners point me in the direction of a decent file recovery programme? Long story short, my mother had her photos saved on her laptop; thinking it was job done, she deleted them off her camera SD card, unfortunately she didn't back up the laptop. Shortly after Christmas, the laptop went tits up and required the HD to be formatted, losing several holidays worth of photos.

Now I know that when you hit delete, you aren't actually deleting files unless you then overwrite the disk space with other data. However, having tried trial versions of various file recovery programmes, it would appear that not all are equal. Some have managed to find aroun 80 photos, being the 80 from the most recent holiday still on the card! Others have found around 300 (File Restore Professional), with other programmes coming in somewhere between.

So obviously, not all recovery programmes are equal; I don't mind paying for the software, but would rather pay for something that will recover all the files, not just a few. Does anyone have any suggestions? And is there anyway of being able to tell that you have recovered all the photos?

We did cloud the issue by looking at it with other programs first, so it might just have produced 100% if we hadn't done that.

If it was mine, and the hard drive had been formatted, I think I'd take the drive (or computer) to a forensics recovery expert.

Files can (reportedly) be recovered from a drive that's been formatted, but it probably is not going to be easy.

General rule, don't use the camera card, or the computer hard drive. Every "write" operation risks over-writing the deleted files, making recovery more difficult.

I used Easus Data Recovery in the past, with satisfactory results, on a formatted drive. Since you formatted the drive I would say that there's no chance of getting every picture back, and even without the format it would be unlikely you would get them all back. But you should be able to get a large amount of them, depending on what went skewy on the drive.

And for the sake of recovering the maximum number of pictures stop using the laptop right now! I take it the laptop has been in use since the reformat? You might be lucky & the photos were stored on parts of the disc that haven't been written to since. Or not....:sad:

I don't think you would ever know. If she has used the card since you will be lucky to get many off, I fear. I would suggest go with 'the max'?

Even if he is, then EASUS should recover the files deleted from the memory card. I had one incident when the battery died when viewing the pics and it buggered up the FAT on the card. EASUS was able to get every single pic back.

Not saying it'll work for every case, but it's worth a try. Dunno if he has tried it but there's a free version, not a trial, which allows you 1Gb recovery at a time. Get it here (http://www.easeus.com/download.htm).

The above is an example of why I ramble on at great length to get information across. It takes a long time to write an unambiguous description of a fault.

The OP does intertwine two issues, but I'm left with the feeling Some photos - the last batch - are on the card anyway, but the HD is the real target.

Photorec will recover data even if a file system is missing. It does it by searching the storage media for bytes that match specific data types, and not by referencing the file system's tables. Free to use (but feel free to donate!).

PC Inspector File Recovery PC Inspector - kostenlose Software fr die Datenrettung von CONVAR - Die Datenretter. (http://www.pcinspector.de/default.htm?language=1) is freeware, but I have used it to recover files after partitions have been deleted and formatted. It is freeware.

Another vote for PhotoRec. Free and open source, and annihilates most of the expensive payware for effectiveness. I used it recently on a box of 10+ year old memory cards which have reformatted and used countless times and was astounded by what I recovered from many years ago.
