Hi to all you fellow pprunes,

I was wondering where people would suggest to go to complete CPL/IR training. I’m looking for an appropriate trade off for course price against the FTOs reputation.

For instance I found a school in the states that offers a CPL/IR (although some amount of conversion or re-examination is required to get the JAA approved IR upon arrival back in the UK), that offered the training for just under £10K. Also I looked at the other end of the spectrum, OAA, who offer the CPL/IR/MCC for £28k. Add on your extra expenses for fish and chips and cups of tea and you’re probably talking more like £30K.

Anyone with any advice on preferably UK based FTOs that offer modestly priced CPL/IR training courses would be much appreciated.

Kind Regards

Its all about the instructors

You can only really get a feel by personal recomendations.

There are a few schools out there that you never here about or if you do the threads are very short lived because nobody has any moans about them.

They are usually not the cheapest but also nowhere near as expensive as the big boys.

Another good "test" is to see what the waiting list is to start. If its zero that tells you something. If its a couple of months and you have to book your slot that also tells you something.

Also as well sometime a lack of glossy advertising tells a story. Some schools don't need to advertise they do it all by word of mouth or they have a little advert which has been the same for years in one of the industry mags.

The school I went to sold out so I can't recommend them but my instructor is still doing CPL/IRs at Sherburn (Kevin Rowell) and i would recommend him.

From the FO's I have flown with..

Exeter, Tayside, Tayflight, Bournmouth all seem to produce a quality product.

As for the ones to avoid you can do a search on here for the names.

By far the one I have heard the most gripes about is AAA in humberside. I am sure if you do a search you will get the drift about what happens.
