On March 16th, 2011 a German Navy Sea King and its crew on their way back from St. Tropez to their homebase Kiel-Holtenau made a precautionary landing on a sports filed.

Newspaper report (http://www.hna.de/nachrichten/landkreis-northeim/northeim/marinesoldaten-landen-sportplatz-1164406.html)

Reading the article it seems that they were flying VFR night and didn't want to take the risk to climb higher and continue IFR due to assumed icing conditions at higher altitude.

Well done, good decision. It takes some balls to just say "NO".

:ok::ok::ok:

What is? Oh, yes....your handle is.
The link is in German, so I'll take your word for it that they did what they did.

TC - you often have very interesting and informative comments - and sometimes you're just a bit of a....... As my Granny used to say "If you don't have anything nice to say - don't say anything!"

In the german link it says that they made a precautionary landing under VFR due to the fact that at IFR altitude they suspected icing. They planned to take off again on Thursday morning, but due to a technical problem found on preflight and that was not related to the precautionary landing, they could only leave Friday morning. It didn't mention what they had for breakfast nor did it mention if they had a good night of sleep.
