Water Ski World Record: Mexican Fernando Reina Iglesias Breaks Fastest Barefoot Water Skiing Record | Strange News | Sky News (http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Strange-News/Water-Ski-World-Record-Mexican-Fernando-Reina-Iglesias-Breaks-Fastest-Barefoot-Water-Skiing-Record/Article/201103215947904?lpos=Strange_News_First_Home_Page_Feature_Te aser_Region_0&lid=ARTICLE_15947904_Water_Ski_World_Record%3A_Mexican_Ferna ndo_Reina_Iglesias_Breaks_Fastest_Barefoot_Water_Skiing_Reco rd)

A Mexican has established a new world record for the fastest barefoot water skiing.

Fernando Reina Iglesias was towed by a helicopter in Acapulco and reached 153mph on his second attempt.
The local businessman and lawmaker for the Partido Verde Ecologista (Green Party) broke the record of 135mph established in 1989 by American skier Scott Pellaton (http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/search/Details/Fastest-speed-barefoot-waterskiing-%28male%29/64421.htm).
Public notary Manlio Favio Pano witnessed the event and corroborated that Reina reached the record-breaking speed, recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records.
Mr Reina dedicated the record to his hometown and said it was important to do positive things for the tourist destination.
Acapulco (http://indepth.news.sky.com/InDepth/topic/Acapulco) has been the scene of bloody drug cartel turf wars.

Hey TET. I understood that anyone waterskiing in your territory was in fact known as "bait" to catch the snapping geckos aka future handbags. I guess this one would only catch the really fast ones. ;)

Apart from the single-engine no-floats stuff [mind you, that's too low to have a split second to deploy floats anyway....], there's also local controversy about the fact that this was a State Government helicopter purchased with funds from the local Department of Health....

.
Anyone remember a Kiwi named 'Grant' (RIP) - evidently he performed a similar service for a group of friends with a Pacific 500 off the coast of Madang (PNG) at Mal's resort!

Anyone with photos?
