RANT (http://www.oddsoft.co.uk/) is the only one to use for practicing nav-aids.

For practicing your basic instrument scan, any flight simulator will do. Something like Microsoft Flight Sim is absolutely fine.

I use MSFS and X-Plane.

What aircraft?
G1000 or steam gauges?

There are great add ons for fsx, Mindstar and Eaglesoft if you want G1000.

I would recommend FSX as base with add ons to get proper instruments

I used RANT and FSX for my instrument training and found them both useful, you may also consider some of the dedicated IFR software simulators like Elite and ASA "On top" Although they are a bit more expensive, they are a great tool for keeping your instrument scan up to speed and are highly realistic.
