JAR USA schools

Hi everyone,

today i went to speak with a manager of a flight school in my place and i was told that what the schools in USA say about converting the FAA licences in JAR in few months are a bunch of lies coz converting them takes 1 year and over 20000£.
Where is the truth?
I am in tocuh with a couple of schools in USA and they both said that the convertion takes about 45/50 days and costs about 8000£.

Wouldn't say converting always takes 1 year and £20k.

I wouldn't say 1 year and £20k!
Friend of mine a few years ago converted his FAA certs into JAA (UK) in about 2 months or so, with the IR(A) converted in Spain.

Firstly you must understand that there are many stages to the conversion.


ATPL Groundschool
JAA CPL
JAA IR


The first step is to get yourself a JAA class one medical if you don't all ready have one.

The ATPL groundschool if you have no credits is 650 hours and on average takes 6-8 months for someone to complete and there are 14 exams. Normally circa $4,000-$5,000.

The JAA CPL can be completed in the USA and is training as required. Normally on average around 10 hours and around 2 weeks. Normally circa $3,000-$4,000 including exam fees etc for a good student.

The JAA IR conversion must be completed in JAA airspace i.e Europe and is 10 hours sim minimum and 5 hours aircraft. Normally circa $5,000 cheaply for a good student and takes around 2-3 weeks.

If the UK authority add two exam fees which run circa $1,300 each that's $2,600 plus aircraft hire for the test and for a good student at a cheap cost circa. $13,000. I would say a more realistic figure is circa $17,000 for an average student coming out of FAA training.

If you dedicate all your time to conversion and you are required to do the 650hr ground school (most are, there are exceptions), from start to finish you could do it 6 months, but 1 year is realistic. 20000€ is a little high but it is not far off, especially if you add MCC.

sorry guys i forgot to mention that i was talking about converting a CPL+IR FAA in JAR.
The man from the american school said about 45 days less then 10000$.
Can this be possible?

He's probably presuming you turn up to the flight school having passed the JAR ATPL theory exams. If so, then yes, they flying side of the conversion can be done in 45 days!

The theory is what takes the longest time!

As mentioned above the IR part of the conversion must be done in European airspace so you will not be able to complete this in the American school.

To convert your FAA CPL IR into JAR ATPL you need:

Read through 14 books, then pass 14 exams with 80% passrate (1 exam for each subject).
You can do it on your own, distance learning (2000$) or 6 months classroom (6000$).
All exams, if you pass them on 1st attemt, will cost you 1200$.

Now, once you done with that, you gonna have to do some flying and pass couple of practical exams.
How many flight hours you need, depends on how many hours you have.
But in total, you gonna have at least 200hours.

So, if you havent done anything, you should count 7-9 months and around 10-15.000$ to get your JAR ATPL
