I have just recieved the brief, the main headlines;

Troops to make their own way to Afghanistan then claim on JPA.

Meals on flights are optional with a supplement of £5.

There will be a charge of 5p per sheet and 20p per flush in all public toilets, urinals are 15p per visit.

Inflation is fictional.

Why wait for the redundancy announcements to join the tidal wave of those that realise that don't fit the criterea?

There will be a fight to be the first to press the PVR button in about 3 months time.

I suspect there will be a few unhappy overseas pers with the cut in LOA etc, Oh and why does a Sgt get more LOA than a Flt Lt? (speaking as an ex FS).

Duncs my dear chap! PVR is so 20th Century! Don'tcha know it's now "RET" - Request for Early Termination, (which sounds like something carried out in a clinic in Switzerland). At least that's what the Scribbly who briefed this morning told us...

Mind you, same Scribbly was present in the following exchange....

Scribbly: Any Qs?

Teeters: Does "loss of specialist pay" include Flying Pay?

Scribbly: Er ..... dunno ...... it does include Para Pay!

Teeters (who has never left a servicable frame other than on the ground) :confused::confused::confused::ugh:

Thanks for the update; although, on JPA, the button is 'Apply for Early Termination' which does indeed sound very Swiss. I had to remove my hand from the mouse as it hovered over the button - just in case!

I was, of course, simply responding to gijoe's comment. Nevertheless, I will attempt to 'blunt right up'!

Nice! The PVR is dead...long live the PVR!

I shall continue to call it PVR if for no other reason to annoy JPA drivers. ;)

I am overseas , a FLt Lt and an ex-FS also.

LOA - £20 less than a FS! Happy to take the banter on this, yes I'm paid a bit more, yes I made the decision etc. But from a bean counter and common sense perspective it makes no sense at all. I think my rate is fine btw, but the tax free difference of £7200 extra per year for a FS does seem erm, excessive...?

The move to a 3 band system will hopefully be fairer and help out some of the 40 year old cpls I have working for me too.

Any allowance that can be varied according to the recipients wage clearly cannot be designed to meet costs incurred , ie everyone incurs the same costs. So either someone is getting more than is required or not enough. This kind of ridiculous situation has no place if we're trying to save cash :mad:

Fine, they're going to slash allowances to the bare minimum, but honestly, don't try and make these stupid rules sound justifiable MOD

Interesting point regarding the differences in LOA for different ranks, I'd always assumed that it was linked to the average age (and therefore likely financial commitment and loss of partner's wage) for each rank. I'm also a Flt Lt overseas, who can just about accept a 150 pound reduction a month in LOA. However, the CTs, FSs and WOs that will lose around 450 pounds a month are understandably frustrated. I know that these whinges will receive little sympathy here however, an overseas tour does put considerable strain on an individual's personal finances. Selling/ buying cars, partners not being able to find work, expensive insurance and the inability to obtain credit in the new country all lead to stretched finances.

A few of the aspects completely ignored by LOA. I wonder if they will add something for the legal requirement for Winter Tyres (and the rims for them to go on)! - doubt it. Roll on March.

Obviously I'm in the same boat as you today with the LOA reduction. As you say, not pleasant but manageable. But the reductions for some personnel - particularly NCOs (all of them) are eye watering.

I have a sgt with 2 children dropping £300 per month, a WO dropping over £700 per month. Net. These are examples; everybody has dropped excepting SACs who increase by 25p a day. I take no pleasure whatsoever in the levelling of the field.

LOA serves it's purpose to compensate for what you lose by moving shortish term overseas - my wife's salary, 20K loss on 2 cars I had no intention of selling etc etc.

But again, I'm fine. You try applying the same criteria to one of my cpls, married with 3 kids, who expected a certain income, planned his finances around it and overnight loses £250 net income. It can be a deal breaker for their household finances and there is no comeback. What can he do?

Bloody disgraceful. I said in my post above that I thought the change may benefit some of my juniors which would've pleased me. Senior officers, WOs and FSs could've taken a bit of a hit to finance it. However there was no redistribution at all, just cuts all the way down to the lowest denominator. No assessment of impact, no rational decision whatsoever, just cuts.
