In this weeks Forres Gazette was this easily missable paragraph

Kinloss will cease to be an active airfield on Sunday July 31st 2011

It will finally cease to be an RAF Station on March 31st 2013

Defence Estate will take over the airfield from March 31st 2014

Interesting.
I wonder what will happen to the VGS currently flying from there.

Who looks after it for the period from Mar 2013 to Mar 2014?

And the Forres Gazette got this information from where..... A conversation with an off duty stacker in the Beastie, who had heard it from their mate at Air Command, who'd heard it from.....?

Surely the Forres Gazette (God help us) can't be the only source for these dates if they are correct.

(no offence to stackers, random choice of trade!)

Probably from the official newsletters, put out by the RAF Kinloss Station Commander this week, informing those poor sods still 'working' there what the latest updates are.

Any call for a prison or housing estate up there?

...it's on the front page of the Kinloss website. Try google "RAF Kinloss" and it's all there to see.

The fighting 624th.VGS still operates from what is now known as RMB Chivenor using their own ATC but liaising with the SAR Flt. on airfield/runway movements , so I don't see any reason why a VGS shouldn't still operate from Kinloss , providing ,of course , there's still enough pennies in the pot for all the VGS's to still operate !:hmm::hmm:

Normal practice is it is handed over to Contractors who build a new Swimming Pool, new Messes, resurface the roads, and generally spend an fortune on the place under a MOD contract before closing it for good....

Phase one.. the practice for the Kinloss closure was being carried out at RAF Wittering before that too was scrubbed.

Or am I being cynical?
