Hi all,
I am trying to find a JAR reference or something similar about the requirement to maintain a logbook as a pilot (electronic or paper). I know it's a must in Australia, but how about Europe?

Are SFIs required to log their hours too?
Thanks for any pointer.

JAR-FCL 1.080 shall give you all the answers you need:

JAR–FCL 1.080 Recording of flight time
(See IEM FCL 1.080)
(a) Details of all flights flown as a pilot shall
be kept in a reliable record in a logbook format
acceptable to the Authority (see IEM FCL 1.080).
Details of flights flown under JAR–OPS 1, may
be recorded in an acceptable computerised
format maintained by the operator. In this case
an operator shall make the records of all flights
operated by the pilot, including differences and
familiarisation training, available on request to
the flight crew member concerned.

Very good, many thanks. That solves the question in case a pilot is still actively flying. Looks like the recording of SIM time (as SFI, SFE) is not regulated?

JAR-FCL is not the law and the legal requirements for the recording of flight time in each JAA member state's aircraft are laid down by that state.

For example, in the UK the relevant legislation is to be found in Article 79 of the Air Navigation Order 2009 and applies only to the flight crew of an aircraft registered in the United Kingdom. Either paper or electronic format is acceptable.

There is no legal requirement in the UK to record any time spent in a flight simulator unless it is for the purpose of undertaking a test or examination. There is certainly no requirement (or reason other than personal interest) to record time spent instructing in a flight simulation training device.
