My father worked on this project from January 1967 until June 1969 as designer. Here are some original photos of the test section built in the summer of 1967 at Slingsby Sailplanes, Kirkbymoorside,N Yorkshire.

What exactly was Operation Sigma? Quick Google has little, ie nothing, to say.

Brian: It was a variable wing area sailplane, see here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigma_(sailplane)

Brian,

Also see the last few posts on the T53 thread.

I love the carpenter's bench in the photos. You can tell Slingsby's was a wood and glue organisation.

My general intention of this thread is to give factual and anecdotal info on Sigma hopefully without upsetting anyone. Here are some useful links on Flight Global Archive.

Operation Sigma Ltd was formed in Feb 1966 by G E Burton,H C N Goodhart,F G Irving,B S Shenstone,W N Slater,C O Vernon,L Welch and
K G Wilkinson to manufacture a glider for the 1969 World Champs incorporating the principle of an area and camber changing wing. The flap gave an area extension of 35%.
Sigma is the Greek mathematical letter for " the sum of"
The final result was this.

Well India Four Two what worries me is the ashtray in the photos, plus is that a cigarette lighter on the bench in the first photo?
