Hi All

I've heard reports that a number of airports are no longer poviding braking action reports after runway clearing or where there is a light dusting of snow due to friction testing equipment giving unrealible information.

Just wondering as a pilot what are the deciding factors where a runway is declared open but no braking actions given. Would be more interested in landing into smaller airports where runway lenght is also a factor.

Thanks

My understanding in UK is if the runway is contaminated with water, slush, snow etc then braking action readings are unreliable, so pilots are given information on the type and amount of contamination on the runway. The only time braking action details can be provided is when it is measured on a runway covered with compacted snow/ice and the readings must be calculated using the snow/ice braking action table.

Information and guidlines on this subject is contained in document CAP683 which is available on the CAA web site.
