Central Flying School Guild Trophy
An award to an individual, group or organisation that, in the opinion of the Court of the Guild and with the endorsement of the Central Flying School, has made an outstanding contribution toward the achievement of excellence in the delivery of flying training or instructional standards.
SQUADRON LEADER SELWYN WILLIAMS
Citation: Sqn Ldr Williams retired from the RAF last year following 39 years' service. Commissioned in 1977 after several years as non-commissioned aircrew, he completed navigator training in 1978 and flew over 1,000 hours on the Phantom F4, consistently assessed as above the average. His instructional potential was identified early and, exceptionally for a first tourist, he was posted to instruct at the RAF Navigation School. Awarded A1 Ground and A2 Air Instructional CFS Categories, he worked tirelessly to develop the students under his command to their full potential. His instructional ability proven, he was selected to instruct at the USAF Navigation School at Mather AFB. A 'distinguished graduate' of his instructors’ course, Williams’ professionalism was such that he finished his tour leading their Standards Unit, a rare honour for an exchange officer.
An unbroken series of flying tours on the Nimrod MR2 followed, with Williams holding a Combat Ready (Advanced) Aircrew Category for 13 years. He completed instructional tours on one of the Squadron Training Teams, the Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) and the Standards and Evaluation Unit with the same passion and dedication that made him stand out from his peers earlier in his career. There are countless navigators, some in the higher echelons of the Service, that have benefited from Williams’ professionalism and mentoring at first hand. He is still the first person that the majority of Nimrod navigators, regardless of rank or experience, will contact for advice.
Retiring with almost 9,000 hours, he became the OCU's MR2 Navigator ground instructor with the Civil Service. Due to the early cessation of MR2 training, however, he converted to the MRA4 becoming the first Tactical Co-ordinator foundation instructor. He has thrown himself whole-heartedly into this new role, further developing the industry-delivered course to a high level. Although retired from the Service, he has continued to act as the Rear Crew CFS Agent for the MR2 and will continue to do so with the MRA4. A cornerstone of the Nimrod OCU, he will continue to influence and guide the next generation of Nimrod Weapon System Operators for the foreseeable future.
For his dedication and tireless work as an instructor, over many years and differing aircraft types, Squadron Leader Williams is awarded the Central Flying School Guild Trophy.
