Hello,

Has anyone used Port Blair as an enroute alternate before? Only information I can get is its day light operations only and that is from 2006. I see Kingfisher, Air India, another airlines use it for domestic flights.

I am having a tough time finding out about the ability to use it as an enroute alternate from Maldives to Hong Kong in order to avoid ETOPS.

Thanks in Advance!

Savarkar can be used but your mob'll need to get permision
from the India DCA to use it as an enroute alternate HJ. If
you go in there half-arsed there'll be trouble.

The India blokes will know more than I do.

Basically you cant use it as an ETOPS or enroute alternate. Its only open for 6.5 hrs a day .0100-0730z, and if what I was told is correct you can only use it in the morning before the wind picks up. Plus you need special approval to land there from the DGCA, unless of course its a dire emergency.

And its a one way strip for for landing (LDA 1643m avail at the moment only) and the other for take off, and there are so many equipment failures from ATC there you will always need an alternate for that airport anyway (check out the notams!) Thanks for the responses. Yes of course PPR is needed form the DGCA and yes it will be difficult I am sure. Just wondering if anyone uses it as an alternate.

I wonder how Bangkok Airways is able to fly BKK to MLE? Do they have ETOPS 90?

Does anyone even have a sample approach for this airport?

Thanks!

Not argueing with you itsbroken but our mob was looking at it before
it got ETOPS aproval. The DGCA replyed it would look into it but never did.
There was one memo I recall that VOPB as an enroute alternate had a
very narrow window due to OPR hours (not to mention ETOPS wx) but
was available during those hours for emerg only (went to great lengths
about having to declare mayday).

Anyway it fizzled out when ETOPS was ok'd.

@itsbrokenagain... you can definitely use port blair as an alternate regardless whether its an ETOPS or non etops routing. The operational hours are short however if you're within the "working hours" i dont see a problem with nominating that as an alternate. And if you were to file an IFR flight plan, I am sure they would consider it? I told ya in the previous thread, you know nothin bout south east asia.Go back to coolangatta will ya?
