Cubana Crash at Quito

In August 1998 Cubana Tu-154 overshot the runway at Quito after an engine failure, plowed into a soccer field and was gutted by flames.

Did anybody know, if there is a official report is published? I know, there is an report from the DAC, but they refused it, to release the report. As cause was "human failure" given.

Are there any planes to build a new airport, apart from residential areas.

Only info I know of is that they ARE looking at moving the airport in a few years. I read a few weeks ago that the Ecuadorian govt was requesting bids to build a new aiport about 30 km east of the current location, that is, in an ample valley outside the tall ridges east of the city.

If I recall there have been a bunch of accidents there. A AOM DC10 leased to Cubana a few years ago. O am I mixing with another airport in the area?

The Cubana chartered AOM DC-10 went off the deep end on Rwy 19 at GUA.

As to an alternate airport at Quito, that's all talk. The reality is that the present location, right smack in the center of the city, is altogether too convenient to be closed.

Cotopaxi aerodrome (SELT) at Latacunga, 43DME south of Quito, is an alternate, but the highway connection with Quito needs
vast improvement.

Since the TU-154 aborted T/O crash, the previous steep drop off on Rwy 35 overrun has been built up into an positive incline.

The best I can do for you for this thread is the report for the Cubana DC-10. Because it was a French owned aircraft, the French have published it on their website(still in Spanish). Try www.aviation-safety.net. (http://www.aviation-safety.net.) Then click on other sites and go to the french accident investigation agency and search on their site.
