Bristol Distance Learning ATPL Theory

Hi All,

Anyone in our presence completed Bristol ATPL Theory long distance course.

I too am considering it via correspondence....if so how did you find it as per online, materials, question database, refresh attendance etc.

It looks to be the most economical....

Is the average finish time 6months? or so? I am a very good student in this regard so would like to get some indication for my planned time line..

All insights welcome.

couple friends of mine have used them and highly rate it! friend of mine just come back from the 2weeks refresh classes b4 the first lot exams n said they are excellent !

I am with Bristol, just about to complete mod 1 with exams booked in a month. So far the course material seems of good quality and instructors always on hand to clarify any of the more complex stuff (Met, Gen Nav etc.)

It's taken me bang on 6 months to do mod 1, but I also work full time. I know some folk get through it quicker.

I've just completed module 2 at Bristol, and have just my Air Law exam to do, which is tomorrow!

Bristol are excellent, it's an intense two weeks but gives you a good grounding to sit the exams. From my experience going through the distance learning material will give you about 75% of what is needed for the exams, the 2 week brush up course sorts the rest out (loads of 'lightbulb' moments over the 2 weeks!)

In terms of time scale, it depends entirely on circumstances as to how long it will take you to complete the course. It's taken me about a year to do all 14 exams, but I work full time so can only study in what spare time I have. There were people on the same course as me who had done in 6 months and in some cases less, just depends how much time you can put in.

The question bank is brilliant, and is virtually identical to the questions you will get in the exam, however you can't get by just learning the questions (particularly for principles of flight), the CAA occasionally change numbers on some questions so that the answer is different. There are the odd exam questions which are genuine rubbish, but Bristol will point these out.

I completed my ATPL exams via Bristol last month. I came out of them with an average of 95% after studying for just over a year while working full time.

I cannot directly compare the Bristol course with any other as I have only taken the BGS course but I will say that the whole experience has been a very positive one. The materials are excellent, the support is very good when you are studying and the two week brush up courses before the exams are a revelation. The instructors are a good mix of guys from a wide cross section of the aviation industry as all seem to have a real vested interest in getting you through the exams.

Hi,

I started with AFT at Coventry in January 2010 and sat 4 exams before they decided not to carry on the course , i averaged 89% across these subjects taught in full time groundschool.

I then changed to BGS to finish the final 10 subjects averaging 96% and distance learning self taught with the excellent course material and brush ups which are worth the money alone !!

I will champion BGS always as just when i thought i was in the mire after AFT Alex contacted me on here and said i was more than welcome to call him , his calm professional manner told me it was the right choice , the rest is history , i finished the last 10 subjects in 4.5 months full time at home.

Type Bristol groundschool in search , iv never seen a bad word about them on here!

I am doing some flying in the usa then heading back to europe to start and finsh atpl GS thru Bristol. Probably start everything in May 2011.

Where do you sit exams?
Do you do your 1-2 weeks refresher then straight into exams? How does that work? :confused:

You can sit your exams at a few locations (see BGS web site) and it looks like you sit them immediately after the brush-up courses. It's going to be a challenge getting 3 consecutive weeks off work (twice!)

After having used Bristol GS myself and completed all the exams 18 months ago I can only say positive things about them. The materials provided are very professional and whilst the brush up courses are intense they do exactly what they are intended to and get you through the exams. I passed all my exams first time and although at times you wonder how you will get through the exams, ultimately you have to put faith in their system which is tried and tested by so many.

That sounds very wise Mustard, you should do well. I was referring to myself getting 3 weeks off - it's going to be tough, but I guess if it's what I want to do.....blah blah....

Sorry for the thread creep, but what's it like flying in the States? I fancy doing a bit of my hour building over there myself.

Hey Goggles,

I enjoy it....I use a good school in Miami ADF Airways- they operate out of Kendall-Tamiami Airport which is inside the MIA Airspace....
Like anywhere you have to make sure to get good instructor...i know them pretty well there....

I will go back there in Feb to do instruments and some hour building then back to ireland for bristol gs....

I am looking forward to the cross countries....mmmm where will i go....:E

Im currently going my ground school with Bristol. I've got 3 exams left to do and I would highly recommend them for the content of the manuals and the brush up courses! The question bank is great and also they give you the digital copies of the notes on iPad/pc so you can learn whilst you travel. All in all... Great!!
