View Full Version : What is the SYSTEM Group in W7?

I've just clean installed Windows 7 on top of Vista. On a logical drive that contains only data there are some files, which were there before the install and haven't been touched, that I can't delete.

When I look at the permissions I see that there are 3 groups - Everyone, Administrators and SYSTEM. For these files Everyone & Adminstrators have read only access, and SYSTEM has full control. I'm signed on as an adminstrator, but I can't change the permissions as it says I don't have authority.

I also can't delete the files as they are read only for administrators. SYSTEM doesn't seem to exist as a 'real' user, so how can I get access to these files to delete them?

Sounds like you need to "take Ownership" as administrator.

Thanks SD, that worked perfectly. Not come across that before, no idea why those particular files were different to everything else.
