Eivissa, thanks for taking the time to scan that magazine. Is it possible to read the registration of the Hughes 500 from any of the photos featured in that magazine? I have been trying to identify that particular helicopter for some time now but I haven't had any luck yet. Thanks.

I remember Nutfield Ridge 2353!!!............I joined Bristows 1st February 1967. ( 7/9d/hr ).

May 1967 sent to Das Island 137 GBP/ month ( 4 months on, 3 weeks off ) I dont remember staff whinging on about pay/conditions back then, like happens nowadays.

500 fan..I think that elusive 500 on the cover was the original US demonstrator with an N number ,probably over for the 67 Farnborouigh Air Show(or Paris ) and visiting the new dealer...Mike Hughesdon????? who was a Reading high spec car dealer.
Helicopter World was published by former test pilot Basil Arkell but ran into financial difficulties in the early 1970s.Basil sold it on and was real p#ssed when they folded it .He wanted to restart it and was p#ssed again when a new publisher arrived on the scene and pinched the title !
He was a real character though...flew Autogiros before the war and later flew the Fairey Gyrodyne.

Heli1, thanks for that. Yea, I think you are correct about it being a N-Reg machine. The problem I have is that, I think Hughes built a non-flying mock-up of the Hughes 500 in the exact same colour scheme as this flying example. It actually looks like this machine was converted from an OH-6A but has a civilian column-style instrument panel. It might be the early demonstrator that was then painted in a blue-and-white scheme and featured in a lot of Hughes publicity material from the late sixties. Thanks anyway.

The MIL 10 Helicopter shown on the cover of the March 1967 edition flew into Redhill Aerodrome to demonstrate to Bristows.

The visit was memorable for seeing all the fertilizer that had been spread on the airfield, be blown in huge white clouds, drift away, and land all over South Nutfield village!!

When asked technical questions about the aircraft, the crew (probably KGB) knew nothing about anything!!

It was a serious piece of Russian airborne agricultural machinery, massively over engineered, and resembled a ship with its anchor handling winch standing in the middle of the deck.

Needless to say, Bristows were not interested.

The little piece on the Trans-World Helicopters Hughes 300 is a little embarrassing. :O At least the poor soul was already dead before being dropped from the helicopter.

From some October 1965 cuttings is a suggestion that the Hughes 500 might be N9000F ....

There was a demo of the 300 and the 500 to Trans World based in Shannon and involving an eleven day tour. The 300 was EI-APH [later G-AWKC and OE-AXG].

Heli1 ... we are talking about Mike Hughes, who had a business ... ( Mercedes dealer I think) being the 'Hughes of Beconsfield' business. He may have been the 1960s Mike of 'Mike & Archie' being the later March Helicopters at Sywell, but possibly Mike Smith and Archie McKenzie.

I recall selling the first Hughes 500E model in the UK to Mike Hughes. We statically exhibited the type on our Farnborough stand circa 1980 ish. Mike wouldn't take immediate delivery since he spotted that many parts on the M/R hub were of '500 D status.'

While on Hughes 500s ... who recalls the beautiful 'Plumage' colour scheme? All spectrum colours around the tail and rear boom area.

I believe a mini minor was £500 new. I remember as a kid noticing that price posted soemwhere because until then I had always wondered how much a new car cost. Neither of my parents apparently know,bless them.

Better than me Tony M (but then you are older!!), I joined Bristows in June 68 and headed for Morocco in a Hiller 12E. We worked 28 days on/7 days off in the UK but travelling time was included in the week off. Used to fly to London via Agadir/Toulouse/Stavanger
