Good day everyone,

I was born in South Africa and moved to the U.S when I was aprox 17. As a result I now am a duel citizen holding passports to both the U.S and South Africa. I did all my training in the U.S and through instructing have built my hours up to aprox 2,500hrs with 400 of that being multi. I also just recently passed my ATP checkride.

My question is that seeing that all of my licenses are FAA, what do I have to do to come to South Africa and get on with an airline? Convert? And if so what do I convert to, JAA, CAA, JAR? If hired, is that something I do at the airline or would I have to find an approved school either in the U.S or South Africa to do the conversion.

Any input would be greatly appreciated
Thank you for the help.

Hi,

You will convert to a SA CAA licence (ICAO), to do that you will have to write some of the SA CAA ATP examinations and then do a medical and a full ATP test with a examiner. The written examinations will be the tricky part, to get booking etc. Good Luck

Anyone got the straight answer on that one yet? What needs to be done to convert. I heard a while ago they were not converting FAA licences. MAte of mine needs to do his now, but cannot seem to get a straight answer. I am not able to share with you his thoughts on trying to get the answer out of CAA, because I will get fired, drawn, quartered and waterboarded by Malema's gestapo.

Anyone with the real gen? What subjects need to be written, and what if any restrictions are there? SA ATP only valid while FAA licence is valid, or is it a full stand-alone SA licence?

Thanks

In the past you only needed to write met,Flight planning and ATG to convert FAA ATP TO SAATPL.

Go to www.caa.co.za (http://www.caa.co.za) get the phone number and ask to speak with Miss moshanele,of license department for latest regs.

Hey there, I saw your post on the forums about moving back to South Africa to fly there. I'm in the same position as you were in your post in 2010 I think. I have dual citizenship RSA and USA. I have a FAA ATP with about 3600 tt and I currently fly as a PIC on the Ce-560 ultras. I was wondering what you did to fly in South Africa and if it's a huge deal to convert.

Hope to hear from you soon
