Caught a glimpse of 2 x Chinooks flying low around LHR just now (1520 UK time). Any idea what is happening?

At 1630 approx on the same day I watched two Chinooks flying in straight line from roughly north to overhead Worthing and out to sea. Lost sight of them when they were well out to sea apparently still following airways.
Interestingly, I do not recollect having seen Chinooks that high (8,000ft?) and cruising. Thought at the time that they were rather high to have come off Odiham. I wonder...?
