Could anyone say from what date in 1940 Me.109s in France had their cowlings and other bits painted yellow? Particular interest in 1/JG3, who so upset my father by twice damaging his lucky trousers that he swore vengeance on them by having the nose of his own Spitfire painted the same colour.

From a website:

The yellow nose paint was first introduced on 109's during the Polish campaign as a recognition marking to avoid "friendly" fire from the Wehrmacht when operating on ground strafing missions
