Saw the Red Arrows practising their display for next week's Farnborough Air Show at Farnborough this afternoon.

There were only eight aircraft performing - are they down to eight now?

Well didn't they crash one in Cyprus and the pilot is still not back up to fitness??

Their display at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year was flown with 8 aircraft due to a pilot being unwell.

I understand that the ejection victim is not coming back this season, and is being replaced by one of last seasons guys. It is taking a little time to retrain him. Kirsty Moore was ill for Goodwood. The crash was not in Cyprus. I think it was Turkey, but may have been Greece from memory.

I'm almost sure I counted nine at Yeovilton....

There were nine displaying at Shrivenham @ 1300 this afternoon. One of the aircraft suffered a hydraulic failure (if I heard correctly), but the spare (without smoke) was employed by Red 1 for the Shriv display.

The crash was on Crete... Kastelli Military Airport, to be precise.

The Arrows were basing at Iraklio Airport, 22 miles away from the crash site.

As stated earlier in the thread, the reason for being down to 8 during the practice is because Red One had a hydraulic failure when inbound to land at Fairford and had to 'blow' the gear.

Thinks - it used to be called 'missing man formation'...............:)

Congratulations, better than just forgetting completely..

Thinks - it used to be called 'missing man formation'........

Please have some respect or learn to moderate what you say.

I have led a missing man formation. It is to pay tribute to a dead colleague.

Now - please keep your uninformed comments to yourself and shut up.

:mad::mad::mad::mad:

If you really want to be educated then feel free to PM me Mr. BOAC civilian - if you dare! You're not going to are you! Very wise....

I think you'll find that BOAC was a 'Red' in a previous career, and, if I'm not mistaken might have flown Lightnings.

A case of "Ooooops I am sorry BOAC" would probably put it all in the past.

Thank you for posting those pics, I really enjoyed them.

I was there on the Saturday, and watched the display, but rarely take any pics as I tend to be so busy taking (poor quality) snaps, that I miss the action itself:bored:

TEEEJ Are you picking on me?
It seems you singled me out for photo request sizes in your post..........Surely all request for phots have to be that size, and not just the ones for me:}:E

EDIT: TEEJ is not picking on anybody bs. He is actually assisting me in an attempt to politely ask that posts with pics are sized at the max of 850x850 otherwise I would be forever doing it myself. Thanks for your understanding.

I think what LM was trying to get across is that in 'Missing Man' the empty slot is inside the formation, not at an extremity, so that empty slot is very apparent to observers on the ground. It has also been my sad duty to lead one, but it was very much appreciated by the mourners outside the church, most of whom were not aviators.

The most extreme missing man flypast that I have witnessed was when the Odiham wing with their new Hunters put up 16 as a box of boxes from Farnborough for Princess Margaret in July 1955. On take-off number three in the third box speared in fatally just outside the Farnborough boundary with a false lock. The remaining formation flew over immaculately past the smoke.

I think the adverse comment about the Missing Man is a bit OTT.

On the subject though, I well recall flying in such a formation out of Coningsby for a funeral at Wittering, and watching the Nav in one a/c getting well stuck into his sandwich as we overflew the funeral. (He was subsequently killed in RAFG.)

I think LM might have spent lunchtime in the pub:hmm::ooh:

I very much doubt that BOAC will be offended but I can assure you that he would never make a comment that was out of place. Like so many things that are said, there will always be someone who will read it another way. He was indeed a RED and for two seasons!
