Noticed a couple of new (renamed?) waypoints out west of Brissy...someone in Airservices is a fan of drifting?!

Unless it's a coincidence, 'hachi roku' is japanese for 86, most well known as a reference to the Toyota AE86 Trueno, popularised by the 'Initial D' manga series & movie about illegal street racing and drifting in the mountains of Japan.

Anyone found any other obscure references to cult followings in the latest changes?

Owned one of them for over twenty years now, before the whole annoying drift thing came along.

But on-topic, good to see a little humour in the naming of waypoints. :)

The AE86 still looks like a Toyota Sprinter to me :}

Xatrix, I doubt that Toyota bought the "drifting" version out to OZ.........

It's still a Corolla coupe with less than 100kW in Oz :8:}:8:}

Having said that, you'll probably get over 500,00km out of it with 'nary an ounce of trouble, 18W. ;)

Wasn't there a number of enroute points called Nissan, Datsun and Mazda north west of Darwin?

Not to mention LARRY, MOOWE, CURLY, SHEMP and STUGE.:} Most of them have gone, now.

Or the Waltzing Matilda lyrics along the FIR boundary.:ok:

Or the lyrics from the Jim Reeves classic: "Put Your Sweet Lips A Little Closer To The Phone". :hmm:

TID.

Hate to disagree with the great TID. I'm petty sure its not a sprinter.

A few years ago there was a route out of Brissy to the west. Waypoint names were,

ITINK ISAWA PUDY CATA

Read it fast.

18 wheeler - Nice 86 mate, super clean. If you were looking to get rid of it now you would make a killing. Good combination of Takumi tax and P plater tax (assuming that it is N/A and not modified) it would attract top dollar for sure.

Another few funnies are on the RAAF's air-to-air refuelling tracks in NSW...
CALTX, MOBIL, EXXON, VALDZ:ooh:

Apologies for the continuing thread drift. (no pun intended!)

Yes the Aussie Toyota Sprinters had AE-86 on the chassis plate but mechanically they are closer to the AE-85 type, which never came to Australia. The only thing that makes them an '86 is the 1600cc 4A-C engine, the diff and brakes are all AE-85 gear.
And yes Toyota Aus imported and sold something like 85 - 100 pukka AE-86 twin-cams, so they could run them in Aussie Group A racing in the 80's & 90's. FWIW they were 98kW from the factory, not 86kW as is commonly stated.

Um it's somewhat fiddled with. :)

That's a 150kW Toyota Altezza gen five 3SGE in it. Also got four 310mm discs all round, etc.

That one always cracked me up!
There's another few like that around the world as well. I can't remember the specifics but there's a few in Asia, no doubt from Europeans that wanted to leave a bit of a mark in the area when helping set-up the airspace.

Whilst we are on the subject of waypoint names:

There is a route (I think its somewhere around YNWN or YPBO?) and starts off with GORDN DONDI(?)

Whenever ATC give the clearance via these points they make it sound like a name - Is it an ex controller or something like that?

Always had a chuckle when I saw the waypoint AMATO on the south-west corner of a FIR boundry. A colonial servant who stayed on after Independance in the CAD, who would ramp check us, (caused many a battle), and generally give 'advice', had to leave the country hurriedly after some compromising material and people, were found by the police in his home. Seems the waypoint name survived far longer than he did when he went back to an island off southern Italy.
