Hi All,

Brother is seriously thinking of doing PPL (doesn't have a PPRuNe account so am posting on his behalf) - based near East Grinstead (Sussex), he's got options open to him. Wanting your advice on value for money, distance to drive each day, possible intensive course (under 7 weeks preferably) and also quality of training. Have a budget of £6000ish - give or take 1000.

Is thinking of either Biggin Hill, Redhill, Shoreham or Headcorn (preferably the former 3) - please advise?

Best wishes,

Aero Mad

Having instructed at the two larger schools at Biggin, I'd recommend either of them. Cabair is more expensive, but possibly better service. EFG is a much more club atmosphere (probably more suitable for your budget) Both provide excellent training. The nuts and bolts of what they provide (instructors, aircraft etc.) are the equally good.

Next on the list would be Shoreham. I don't know about the schools, but it's a good, busy, CONTROLLED airfield (like Biggin) This factor can be daunting for people who train at uncontrolled airfields like Headcorn. They get the license there and then never want to go to larger controlled airfields as "all the procedures and ATC stuff are too hectic".

Oh, add to that, Biggin has 2 proper runways, this makes training more likely even after rain. Grass runways get waterlogged.
