View Full Version : Was it a VC-10 ?

Friday evening +/- midnight over London and i'm guessing heading east/south east was a much louder than normal aircraft noise that went on and on and on :) and also the reverberation came back again more quietly after fading away a couple of times. It reminded me of years ago and various VC-10s heading out late(r) in the evening towards Africa and the Far-East (BOAC and East African Airlines).

I'm guessing that it was ex-Brize heading for the sandpit, so might anyone know if my ears were correct ?

Don't know about that SHJ, but it was certainly very nice to see one displaying at the Biggin Hill Air Fair (it landed too!) weekend before last and even better to see it whistling over Coulsdon at a couple of thousand feet or so on the Sunday afternoon, presumably on its way home. The best looking jet airliner in my view.

cant beat the sound of those Conways, we used to watch them going over into Manchester when I was a lad. The russian copy IL62 was I am led to believe pants though

Hallelujah!

Some replies, although alas not to put me out of my misery. That VC-10 at Biggin Hill must've been a sight to see, i missed the show this year....I don't suppose that my VC-10 would have been picked up on someone's SBS monitor by any chance ? The sound profile was very distinct and unlike any of the normal newer late night departures from LHR and due to the quietness of the midnight hour i was able to hear the sound for a long time as it went overhead and carried on for quite some time.

When will it ever end. :ugh: And instead of being idly 'led to believe' why don't you do some simple bl++dy research?

The competition: Il-62 (http://www.vc10.net/History/Comp_il62.html)

SHJ.. I'm not sure if an outbound from Brize would fly over London. If it was bound for Afghan areas it would probably pass well south of London and out over Dover. How high it would be abeam London is anyone's guess but I'd bet on 20,000ft plus.. We often hear a late night 747 out of Heathrow and if the air is still and windows open we can hear it for ages..

Sorry I can't help. The SBS Forum might.....

Thanks for the replies chaps! Good to know that my ears were able to distinguish the sound of the conways from a distance after some years. Although only metal and engineering creativity, it will be a sad day when the last VC-10 heads for St Athan for breaking up. :{

My ears told me :} that the sound was somewhat to the south of the capital and a good bit higher than any LHR departures, though on this night the planes were taking off towards the west, so i could guess that it wasn't from anywhere local.

Saw 2 of the beauties this morning sitting on the ramp in Muscat, along with a Nimrod and 2 Global Express ASTORS.

Best looking aircraft ever!

One took off from Marka Airport, in Amman, Jordan last Friday morning, beautiful to watch as it woke the city up!!!

WR & SHJ

The one that flew over Cardiff was on its way into St. Athan but not for the last time. It was coming in for a Major servicing - the very last aircraft of any sort to do so here. The remaining aircraft will be coming in for Minor Servicings only until the OSD in 2013.

Sadly missed at Yeovilton on Saturday, static park not a patch on previous years. A sign of the times I guess.
At least XH558 gave a good, if rather sedate, display.

In the mid-seventies I used to see the BA version on it's Pole Hill SID at about 10000ft over Bury, north Manchester. Always seemed to be a crystal clear winters morning. Can't remember the BA B707 that came out before or after!

Ah, that's what the old girl should look like. No pointy thing on the nose and nothing hanging under the wing. They were like that when I first started on them. :D

This is the most beautiful aircraft I ever seen. It is such a beauty! I take off my heart to Britain for VC 10s. If no more of the VC 10s. I will still cry over spilt milk.:oh:

This is the aircraft which made me love my job as CC. When going to LON aboard one, I used to get ready for pick up 4 - 5 hours before departure.
And I wouldn't sit down for all this time not to crease my beautiful uniform. Talk of craziness, I couldn't help myself in one of them. Especially on take off and landing. Gone are the VC 10s, unfortunately.:sad: Now I keep the VC 10s photos. I had these pictures at the gate to my house, at the door, sitting-room and in my bedroom.
