A LONG-running dispute with Qantas engineers has ended over working conditions they claimed could affect the airline’s safety.

The new enterprise agreement includes wage rises of up to four per cent and improvements to*superannuation.

It also ensures the engineers can take rest periods after working overnight, as well as professional development programs to ensure engineers remain at “the cutting edge of aviation technology”, the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers*Australia (APESMA) said in a*statement.

“The deal follows months of work bans involving the high-level professional engineers,” said APESMA senior industrial officer*Alison*Rose.

She said the engineers were charged with making “critical decisions regarding the safety and airworthiness” of the Qantas and Jetstar*fleet.

“This is a good result for Qantas professional engineers and shows what can be achieved when workers take a stand to ensure the*quality of their work is maintained,” Ms Rose said in a*statement.

“It is also a good result for Qantas because it will bring in significant improvements to the way safety is managed within the*airline by*addressing those issues critical to its*maintenance.”
