View Full Version : What will it cost me to get ATPL and first job?

Hi I’m looking into numerous avenues to get into training.

First of all an integrated ATPL is going to cost around £70K with OAA!!!

And after that I have seen airlines require type rating qualifications.

Ryan air are quoting £27k for 737/800 ratings!!

So I could be looking at £100k!!!!!

I want to learn to fly not die in debt.

In comparison.

First Great Western are recruiting train drivers in my area. And they estimate the cost to train a new employee is around £50k per person.

Their structure is modular based and you have to remain with them for a minimum agreed period. Or else you have to pay back some of the training cost.

This is reasonable and something that I could live with.

But to be £100k in debt before I’ve even landed my first job is

Do it - I know 2 ex-train drivers that quit to become pilots and regret it due to the debt. It is a good job, but not worth 100k. I paid 65k and after 5 years still owe all of it.

You can't just 'get' an ATPL. However training for a CPL/IR from zero hours might range from around £40,000 to well over £100,000 depending on where, how and which training route you choose.

As for getting a fist-job, one has to wonder why? Each to their own! It should be very much cheaper than any flying training for sure!:ok:

Oh yer!
That includes a bit of living costs too.
I had to instruct - which I enjoyed, but add another 7k for that as I couldn't find an airline gig. Expect a low wage for a bit if you do instruct. If you get your first job, the reality is about 23k the first year, slowly rising. If you have a loan, mortgage, family, car etc... try to balance all of that on a poor salary and concentrate on doing a TR or the job itself. Rows at home, no money to put fuel in the car to get to work. The cycle stinks!!!!
If someone is offering to give you a golden shake, grab it. The water here isn't cold, but is definately isn't warm for the first 10 years.

Let your head make the decision, not the ambition.
If the head says yes, go for it, but don't expect an easy ride - and many don't make it.

I’m not trying to dumb down the profession.
But it's an airline pilot!! FFS
You could earn more by going to Law School or becoming a Doctor.
What other industry would you see students laden with debts of over £60K.

get the train job and fund your modular training with your salary. do it part time, thats what i'm doing.

Actually I beg to differ. I reckon you could easily go from zero to hero with a full ATPL without even having to demonstrate any aptitude for the job.

In fact you can get your 1,500hrs on an A340 if you really want to. Now it might have cost you upwards of 150-200k by the end of it and then again you will have flown with a variety of rinky dink airlines, have crap standards, probably not pass an entry test into a proper airline and therefore be unemployable anywhere else except in deepest darkest Africa or Russia but hey don't get sidelined by semantics. Its there if you want it. Just look up Eaglejet.

I work in IT and earn more than a train driver now lol.

I could go down the modular route.

But I would still need type rating at the end of the ATPL or would I?

Why do we pay tax on training costs?

Why has BALPA not sharpened its arrows on paying tax and rebuild a better NVQ system, rather than scrap it because of a few pilots that got a cheap PPL out of it? (Blue Book from the CAA = cheque from IRev...simple).

Why, during trainng, do we not get the same entitlements as someone on an NVQ in carpentry, while Trace on the estate gets 35k for her 8 kids (you will get the tax back if you help us FFS, and you will happily take 40% later on)?

Why are we the ones to risk everything that secures our homes and then have to keep our heads together on a dark and stormy night with the odd failure, while the SLF get their seat for a quid and play friggin' scratch cards?

Why are we now paying for an MCC even - it used to be part of the TR?

This is now the future - unless we change it back.....and that ain't gonna happen now...is it?
BALPA are useless and the Government are too busy dipping their blooded hands in the honey pot.

Tell me it is not just for the view as you drink your coffee - airline specific of course.

Midiman,

If I was you I would stay at the IT work if your earning a good wage and do your PPL license for the time being, build some hours up here and there when you can over a few years until this aviation industry builds itself back up and take the next step from there.

Hey everyone, please could someone help me. My dream is to become an airline pilot, i am hoping to save money and go to Oxford Aviation Academy, is the first stage an integrated ATPL? and once achieved does that make me a first officer? then are all my rating qualifications separate? i just need some help in what direction to go? also if i could manage to save even 50K and get a grant for 30K would that ease the debt? im just confused and would love someone to explain it all to me... the best, cheapesr route. im nearly 19 and have 3 Alevels in maths physics and biology although they arent that great BDD. but my GCSEs are all As and A* so i am capable. thankyou all. please xx

Africa? Not really possible if you take into account the 200 000 pounds debts you are talking about (bush and low wage in Africa, more suitable for a north american cheap CPL without debts).
Russia, same, to be hired there, you need a russian passport, they don't hire foreigners.
If you learn russian, AND get a russian passport though, (both not easy right?) they are hiring a lot those days.

There is a reason that you haven't had any replies and I just don't have the heart to say why.

Get a bundle of info from the schools and spend the weekend reading. There aren't any grants, just a f*****g load of money you need to find, then get ready for a life of min rest, sleeping pills, divorce, hotel rooms, fatigue and checks. If you still fancy it.....come on in!!!

Ooooh, no messing with CityFlyer..

The only advice I shall give you is to do your research, there is enough info on this to answer nearly any question! This comes from someone who has spent the last couple of months getting answers to roughly the same questions that you have asked...! lol :ugh:

Best of Luck :ok:
