I was a passenger on BA 284 which left SFO on June 3 and arrived LHR on June 4. At SFO we were told that the APU was not operational and hence were dragged to taxiway where engines were started.

Flight proceeded normally but on landing at LHR we taxi off the runway and were immediately received by a phalanx of fire service vehicles. Pilot indicated that warning light showed a problem at the rear of the aircraft which he believed was a false alarm (think he used the word spurious) but that fire service would check it out.

Spent about 15 minutes hanging around and nothing was found so proceeded to T5 for arrival. We were followed by fire service all the way and aircraft was surrounded by fire fighting vehicles while we were getting off.

Anyone know what happened?

John.

The APU was malfunctioning and, one of those malfunctions was a spurious alarm?
