View Full Version : Probably a very simple answer, but...

Why do routings between Stansted / Newcastle and Oslo show the same flight time even though, at first glance, Newcastle seems closer?

The flown mileages (as used for fare calculation purposes and would not necessarily correspond with charts) are :
LON - OSL 737 miles
NCL - OSL 592 miles

Scheduled times are not usually the same as 'block' times (from pushback to on-stand). The 145 mile difference would correspond to about 15 minutes difference in actual flying time, and given that airlines usually want to show the shortest flying time, specially if there are competitors on the route, I'd also be interested in an answer to the question!

It's one of those questions which is so vaguely formulated that it is impossible to give a meaningful answer.

What "flight time"? Is it from flight plans or an airline schedule?
Is it the same equipment used on both routes?
Is it the same airline on both routes?

Intrigued, I looked this up.

Ryanair seems to be the only airline that operates both routes.

STN - Oslo (Rygge) : 2:10
STN - Oslo (Torp) : 1:55
NCL - Oslo (Rygge) : 2:00

NCL-RYG 565 miles with B/T of 2:00
STN-RYG 685 miles with B/T of 2:10

That makes it 120 miles difference. The only time gained will be in the cruise. 120 miles would equate to roughly 10 mins.

Capetonian, NCE-OSL is 1131 miles ;)

With regard to the different times between TRF and RYG, TRF is 75 miles SSW of Oslo. RYG lies well East of Oslo, just over 115 miles further on from TRF.

Sorry, that was a typo, corrected, thanks.
