Hi there all you local Luton Spotter/Photographers.

For the future , how easy it to get to the South Side crashgate when there is a good depth of snow on the ground.?

I visit this loacation often but would have liked to have visited there during this past Winter to get some "Snowshots".

I am put off as the only route I know leads round from the Terminal areas
via the narrow roads and steep hills under the lights at the east end.

My worry is that I could be stuck in the snow on these small side roads.
(I have a large Auto diesel Estate car)

Do you know if these roads are kept clear of snow as they are the access to
the Lights and the Crash gate?

With thanks for any help with this enquiery.

PS.
Would any regular visitor like to PM me to keep in touch for local Winter conditions etc. as I live quite a distance away. ?

Managed to get the car stuck when turning round in December just for a quick visit.. cue furious scraping and shoveling :\ Lane to the crash gate was very slippy.

Some that I have on this PC:

Hi,

Im a Luton local and my advice is if theres snow or ice around avoid!!

I went back in Feb09 and the road leading to the gate was an ice rink, even with highly experienced drivers you risk slipping on the ice getting to he fence!

Honestly I think if you can walk when its fresh snow its the best option otherwise its a bad idea

Thanks

Thanks for the information.

Leonard320, its what I thought it might be like, "Grim" .
However can you further say how the immedite side roads/hills eg at east end by the lights were?
As my main concern is where would be best to park safely, then walk!!!!!

With thanks to you both.

Just getting to the terminal via the main roads in snow is a total nightmare. These photos shows passenger having to walk between the terminal and the railway station as the road out of the airport became gridlocked.

The bottom line is don’t even think about it on the day that it snows. Leave it 24 hours and take provisions with you including a shovel and be prepared for a long stay.

Hello

The only other route to the South side gate is to take the Lower Luton Road (B653)toward East Hyde make a left at East Hyde toward Peters Green then take the second left back toward Luton, this takes you to the Road up to the crash gate from the opposite direction.

Having said that it would probably be a challenge to attempt that route in the snow and I cant think of any place that you could easily leave a car and walk

You can't get to any part of the airport without going up a hill. Anyway on the day it snows the airport is shut for hours on end. After 24 hours the lanes are usually OK if you take it slowly but saying that I still wouldn't risk it.
