So what's the story with this stuff? Everyone, including my GP/specialist etc etc. All say in the long run it will cause more problems tha it will solve if used continuously.

So what's so bad?

You're talking about Otriven, the stuff you spray up your nose if you have a cold?

Shame I don't know my English well enough to explain all the medical background... if you spoke Dutch it wouldn't be a problem ahaha.

In general, the medicine works short term only, it does some damage in your nose, especially when used over longer periods of time. There is an effect then that makes your body numb (?) to it, so you will need to take more, and in the end it will have no effect at all. Added to that the damage it does to your slimeproducing cells, which you actually need when you have a cold.

Therefore, my aviation-physician says passengers can use it, who don't fly regularly, and for the flight only, but for professionals it is not advised. Better sit at home and wait for your cold to get over.

Me myself, I always have a little bottle of the stuff in my flight kit, just for when I'm on a longer tour and the snot hits the fan, I can or fly back, or can be put on a dead head flight without the risks of my ears exploding.

Hope it helps, and hope you were indeed talking about this medicin :)

Oh dear!

I'm afraid I've been using Otrivine for the last 15 years. Septum still intact and NO side effects. Also - it helps me breath!

I use it myself occasionally... But not to keep me flying when I have a cold.
