Can anyone recommend a good AME to renew my class 1? This is my first renewal and therefore I've not had any dealings with AMEs before.. .I currently live in Knutsford, Cheshire.

Cheers

I go to Antony Owen, who does medicals at Upton Village Surgery, Wealstone Lane, Upton, Chester, tel 01244.382238. Don't know if he's "good", but I haven't had any problems.

Ihave my atco medical done by Dr Reisler. He is based at the Buisness Aviation Centre at Manchester airport 0161 436 0129.I also believe that there is an examiner at the Holmes Chapel medical centre.

You can also get a list of other AMEs in your area through the CAA. I found a very helpful one in my area that way. Unfortunately I don't live in Cheshire though!

I go to a chap called Ian Donnan, who is based. .in Davenport, just south of Stockport. It's. .convenient, being only ten minutes from EGCC round the M60 and M56.

He knows a good deal about all matters relating to aviation, as he is an active PPL himself !!

Staff are always very pleasant and helpful too,. .especially important on the phone if you are trying to make an appointment.

Address and phone number can be got from the CAA SRG web site.

what's it doing now?

I can vouch for Dr. Donnan. I've seen him for years and it's always a pleasure. He's interested in aviation and explains everything as he goes along. His number is 0161 456 0370.

Cheers!

Closest AME to Knutsford is Dr Martin Hudson based in Goostrey. Very professional set up, (good news or bad news?!), backed up with a good web site, capable of accepting bookings. Have a look at www.grasmere-medical-services.co.uk or telephone 01477 532527. Do I get any commision for this?!

I only went to Hudson once, and found the biggest 'jobsworth' I have ever met.

I have a 'Contact lenses' restriction on my class one medical but this character insisted that I did the eye test with lenses, then with glasses, then with nothing, all whilst wearing a 'grey suit'.

I passed, but now I still drive 50 miles to Derby where I have been tested since 1981 without such a pantomime, and without failiure.

Avoid....

I can vouch for Ian Donnan as well. My previous AME retired 12 months ago so I asked around & Ian came up tops. . .A practical gentleman who realises that what you are paying for is essentially a private consultation.

Thanks for all of the replies,

Dr Ian Donnan has received some good reviews and as luck would have it my parents live 5 mins from Davenport. I'll be making an appointment and bob across for my drop & cough next time I'm visiting my folks.

Cheers. .Cypres.

p.s. What (if any) is the female equivalent of drop and cough? - on second thoughs ignorance is bliss :)

I feel I must speak up for Dr Hudson - my experiences with him have been all good. Let me explain:

A few years ago, I emailed him, to ask his advice about getting a medical, due to the fact I have a very unconventional and perhaps rare eye problem.

He supported me all the way, (in my battle with the CAA), through what was quite a long 10 months, until I finally got permission to undertake the rest of the medical, (having only taken the eye examination).

A further hickup occured AFTER taking the medical - the CAA couldn't lay their hands on some of my information, and told me they couldn't issue the certificate. I rang Dr Hudson, and he got on to them, and hey presto, they soon found it, and the medical was on the way.

I found Dr Hudson to be very professional, (he is the AME for Airtours International, by the way), extremely helpful and friendly.

Just thought I'd add my tuppence worth!

No female equivalent, Cypres... although mine did seem to spend a long time over the chest pads while setting up the ECG

I see Dr john Wray who shares the Northern Exec facility at MAN with Dr Reisler. My last two AMEs had retired and I wanted to find someone who has lots of time to go in the AME field.

Excellent & Very helpful.
I can thoroughly recommend Dr Wray.:)
