but the interesting bit is the ATC recording, well worth a listen.

Is it? Highly edited to try and sound dramatic, trouble is it fails as it was just a normal day to day event, ash or not.

this really isn't a story at all.

quote from the ATC recording between controllers and the pilot on comms:

ATC: "Do you wish to declare an emergency?"
PNF: "Negative"
a little later...
PNF: "...repeat, negative, negative emergency, no special handling required."

All that stories like this do is serve to frighten that section of the flying public which is already terrified of flying.
