View Full Version : Ryanair - Mass Layoff

Redline

Sorry to deliver the bad news... but all of us that have the clause in our contract about being laid off in the event of 'excess capacity'...

If the ash cloud continues into next week...O'leary plans to lay off everyone he can...no revenue...we're not needed...clause also states...we can't work for anyone else..

Brilliant

Sad news....but I can't believe the "can't work for anyone else" clause is enforcable. I have seen this fail many times, it falls foul of EU anti-competitive legislation.

I wonder what the BA strikers are thinking?

Presumably this layoff clause is for the 'employed' crews rather than brookfield?

Probably that they should have chosen this weekend for the strike...

At the moment the company layoff's an employee, no rule about competition or similar applies. You can look immediately to work for another company in the same branch.

I understand this is in the FR contracts, however i cant see this actually happening personally.

Seems more like the ryanair rumour mill in full turn, which is understandable. The moment the wind shifts and conditions become more suitable, crews will be flying their arses off trying to pick up the pieces of millions of stranded passengers that STILL need to reach their destinations.

If i was MOL then i would certainly cut pay, completely understandable. However it would be a logistical nightmare laying off lots and lots of people and then re-hiring them.

Stop talking rubbish. Any excuse to knock Ryanair there is no mention of lay offs or anything close ( Iam a contracted LTC ) The company is much too busy trying to run the Airline and cope with scores of displaced aircraft and many hundreds of displaced crew. Where did you hear such a load of cobblers or did you just make it up?

Creating rumors if you ask me.
I do not believe this is on RYR's priority list.
I would not believe any company would do this, especially flag carriers.
O, wait SAS paves way for lay-offs due to ash - The Local (http://www.thelocal.se/26124/20100417/)

As a relative junior 1st officer at FR I am concerned, but I have a feeling we'll get through this.

What really sickens me is that KLM is looking for Dutch government support. Just read it on Dutch teletext. Who's there for FR when the **** hits the fan? Why in heaven's name does KLM not start with doing the right thing and cut down on their excess salaries throughout the company? What happened to Open Skies and minimization of government intervention?

What the hell is wrong with KLM getting Dutch help? I would hope the UK airlines would get help from the new UK Govt and RYR help from the Eire Govt.

Ignore him. Redline is a jackass Cassandra who has been trying to talk himself into Fly Dubai for months. For God's sake, man, GO, and stop spreading unsubstantiated bull**** here. Mass lay offs, my hairy arse. If anything, we'll need even more people after the dust settles to get things back to normal and then pick up the slack created by those lower on the food chain who don't survive. Believe me, they're out there, but FR isn't one of them.

If you want to worry about something, forget volcanic ash and peak oil. Worry about water. Without that, we're all screwed.

Ask him what he thinks about PB, MOL and his decision to leave Easyjet. One of the terminally aggrieved brigade, I fear. He hates BLAPA too, though, so he can't be all bad.

What do people from other airlines think of a relatively junior 1st officer at FR telling another airline to cut salaries? Shouldn't he/she be aspiring to get into a higher paying airline?

Incidentally, in fairness to some of the FR posters here, if the OP is making up stories about layoffs, then that is just wrong.

Calm down plebeian its ok.
A disruption of any kind is most welcome by management as it gives them an excuse to further deteriorate remuneration packages and bleat how they can offer cheap fares to Jo public. It looks like the low cost model is running out of steam as it is not sustainable based on cheap fares alone. There are no other ways to screw passengers with hidden charges so then one must turn to their staff. Far cry from the original model still used at Southwest don't you think?

As for the BA strikers, at least they stood up to an ill informed Irishman hell bent on killing a brand using the GFC as an excuse and told him exactly what they really think of his short man syndrome style of management.

How about you RYR lot, isn't it about time you did something similar instead of just resorting to the usual PPRUNE twaddle?

Like the Irish economy, the irish way of offering air travel on the cheap is near to bursting its bubble too. Broke economy broke pax and any excuse to keep the fallacy alive!

Soullimbo, you need to shut up mate. There's been enough salary slashing in this industry to date, to suggest more is ridiculous. You sure you fly?

With the current no fly in western Europe , just look at the losses it created in just three days .So it just goes to show how much we are under valued . As for the lay off don't think so ,even with MOL hate for pilot he is not that stupid to shoot him self in the foot with summer season coming soon .

You must be retarded, or a management guy. Why would any flying employee claim that any ones salaries are to high?? Goes beyond my understanding. You lead the way to rock bottom T&C:s

The immediate problem facing all carriers is cash flow, not profits. Right now, another few large-ish airlines in Europe are likely to enter administration and stop flying forthwith. Governmental aid is unlikely. At the same time, some of the bigger and cash-rich airlines will do very well, ASSUMING the ash cloud disperses within 2-3 weeks. (After that time period, if the volcanic ash problem remains where it is, all bets are off).

Ryanair Ts&Cs take care of such situations as happening now because if BRK don't fly they earn Euro 0.00 and if FR don't fly they lose 35% of their pay. Company don't need to cut pay IMHO.

18th Apr 2010, 11:14
MOL might be looking forward to the new challenge ahead, like you say some airlines will be struggling even harder now and this may be the straw for the camel and all that.

from my limited knowledge of the company assets and costing, at the moment theres about 50% pilots costing nothing (BRK), no handling charges as there not doing 25min spins, no fuel cost as there not flying, costs will be trimmed back and back so not to eat too much into the 2-3? Billion in the bank!

reckon it will be a case of guns blazing when the sky re-opens, only initial hassle is getting the train set back on the correct rails and milking it for all its worth as others go under (hope not for jobs sake) but quite likely.

Ryanair will not paying their pliots much anyway now that they're all sitting around on the ground.

Ryanair employees are always on here telling us about their massive cash reserves so I expect things will be just dandy for them.

Surly thats a wind up! they cant just decide to take more money, if that was the case can BRK pilots charge more to FR to "Make up for lost revenue?!?"

Zero

You've been here long enough to know which one of your scenarios is more probable.

If we all gave a mere one percent to a union things could be so different.

zerotohero
18th Apr 2010, 14:05
I wish I could believe that! I really do, but I think the way the company is run and the many different countries its is with people from all over the world I don't think there is a union capable of real results.

on another note the tittle of this thread seems to be complete horse sh$$ and think a MOD should shut it down or change the name at least.

Okay all you cynics :oh: what is your take on MOL cancelling everything except Southern European domestic and Southern European originating Southbound flights till 1300 on Wed 21st ,even as Eurocontrol are making half promises that they expect 50% of flights to operate tomorrow , with airspace being opened all the time.

Official line "to give our passengers as much opportunity to apply for refunds ;) Yeah right ! and make rebookings" Ah he does have a heart after all.

It seems they mean it too, of 18 parked airframes at GRO, where normally one would find 10, more than half of them had engines wrapped in big polythene bags (the lo-cost version of these nice red Boeing engine covers) with static/pitots also securely put to bed, with some cobbled together masking tape/polythene condom, by 16L.
Seems a bit little bit OTT (since I haven't seen a whiff of falling ash this far South) , if one was truly proposing to start flying all again as soon as Wed ? ? Guess parking is cheap (read free) in GRO.

Hmnn, "I have a cunning plan melord"
"Yes MOL/Baldrick pray tell me :hmm: "

With apologies to Leo for all those "yellow men" that he so detests :=
