Evenin' All,

I recently did my Class 2 and my very helpful AME spotted something in my eyesight which he said I should check out before going to the expense of the Class one, which I did. I want to become an instructor (stop laughing) but I don't have true stereoscopic vision althougt I have never had any depth-perception problems or instances of double vision (I'm 29 now). Is there anyway of getting around this?

DeltaKilo,

your post doesn't mention the actual results from your eye examination.
However, you can take comfort from the fact that there are few people (Including Pilots) who do have true stereoscopic vision.
You may also have found that you have difficulty in seeing the so called "Magic Images" that they sometimes print in the tabloids etc.
You need good stereoscopic vision to perceive these images.

My eyesight is not perfectly stereoscopic, however this component of my vision is good enough for Class One.
What lets me down is excessive longsightedness in one eye.

I've included some extracts from the JAA website for info.

You can find more info at WWW.JAA.NL (http://WWW.JAA.NL)

Good luck.

Extract from JAR-FCL 3.220 Visual Requirements:

An applicant with significant defects of binocular vision shall be assessed as unfit. There is no stereoscopic test requirement (see paragraph 3 Appendix 13 to Subpart B).

Extract from Appendix 13 to Subparts B and C Visual Requirements:

3 (a) Monocularity entails unfitness for a Class 1 certificate. The AMS may consider recertification for a Class 2 certificate if the underlying pathology is acceptable according to ophthalmic specialist assessment and subject to a satisfactory flight test.

(b) Central vision in one eye below the limits stated in JAR-FCL 3.220 may be considered for Class 1 recertification if binocular visual fields are normal and the underlying pathology is acceptable according to ophthalmic specialist assessment. A satisfactory flight test is required and operations limited to multi-pilot (Class 1 'OML') only.

(c) In case of reduction of vision in one eye to below the limits stated in JAR-FCL 3.340 Class 2 recertification may be considered if underlying pathology and the visual ability of the remaining eye are acceptable following ophthalmic evaluation acceptable to the AMS and subject to a satisfactory medical flight test, if indicated.

4 Convergence outside the normal range may be considered acceptable provided it does not interfere with near vision (30-50 cm and 100 cm).

Hi Cypress many thanks,

One other question though, I've never been able to find details on the JAA site, could you post a link to those requirements and I can work from there then.

Thanks again for your help.
