Totally off forum I know; no joy , however, with Asia expat etc.
I need help setting up a network with Airport Extreme/Airport express and will probably need some ethernet cable laid in between floors. Can anyone recommend a reputable contractor/ computer geek/ guru to help with this ?

If you are simply extending your network upstairs why not try the homeplug route. It uses the house electrical wiring to carry the signal. No complications at all.

The wired signal from a router connects to the homeplug downstairs and from the homeplug upstairs a lan cable to your second pc.

It is very simple and effective. I have been using this system for over two years and bought the two homeplugs in HK :ok:

Unless the re-enforcement in the concrete is blocking your signal, install a 2nd Airport extreme or express on the other floor to extend your network. The price of the 2nd wireless device should be cheaper than the cost of a contractor to install cable in your walls.

Ethernet cable will be about 5 times faster if you are in a busy area.

In my small midlevels flat, the computer connected by ethernet get 90% of the promised speed of connection where the wireless get about 20%.

There is too much interference with so many networks in the area.

In short, cable is the better option and it also has advantages in that it is a more secure network (No listening in that can occur with wifi).

I have no experience of the homeplugs but they sounds interesting :ok:

With respect, I have to speak as I find and I have never had to reset my plugs and the speed is perfectly acceptable. Now, if the electrical wiring in the house/flat is not up to scratch, that's a different matter :eek:

why not get a good strong wireless router with upgraded antennas?
good enough to penetrate one floor...

I've been using a combination of homeplugs and wifi for 3 years now as wifi doesn't go through all my walls. They've both worked seamlessly for me.
