while flying ADL-SYD, was talking to my neighbour on the flight who used to fly on 737-300's for Ansett up until mid-90's, and we were wondering about differences in flying the 734 and the 738

For Flight Attendants, is the 737-400 very different to crew than the 737-800?

From flying, I have noticed the rear galley appears to be set out very differently, and the Business class seats can be convereted to Economy possibly while at the gate to adjust to the necessary configuration, can this cause issues?

Is it a more pleasant aircraft than the 737-800? Also, how many FA's operate on it? I may be wrong but I think I have only ever counted 4 on the -400. Seat map shows there are 3 jumpseats at L1, two rear facing one forward facing and 2 at L2. If there are 4, which of the L1 jumpseats would be occupied, or is it up to the CSM?

Seems a strange question, but it was a surprisingly interesting and indepth conversation I had with her about 737-300 flying!

Most crew really dont like flying the 734 but I dont actually mind it.
The worst thing about it is that it can literally stink from the antiquated toilets. They really are shabby and not at all up to todays standards.
I really like it because of the work space in the galley. The forward galley is particularly better to work in than the 800. Its just got more room basically.
The rear galley is ok but its a pain sometimes cause there is a toilet up against the back wall so if you are trying to get away from the pax on a long flight, there will always be someone going into the back toilet when you are on a break or trying to eat or something. On the 800, the toilets are positioned before the galley so that rear space is basically just ours and ours alone.
The 400 basically operated with only 4 crew. We carry 5 if we are going into/out of Canberra. This is because config changes can occur at the last minute and we can have up to 20 Business Class pax. Because of this, 5 flight attendants are always carried on these sectors.

Hi Jack,

Yes it a different operation and different feel operating on the two different types of 737.

On 734 we operate with 4 crew unless it is a CBR service. All flights into Canberra operate with 5 crew as the extra crew member enables the business class configuration to increase to 20 business class seats.

On 734 two crew sit at the front and two at the back. On the 738 we have two at the front and three at the back.

The 734 has louder engine noise !!
