Non Aircrew flying training in the RAF

Hello to everyone. This my first time using PPRUNE.

I am a serving airman in the RAF and would like to do my PPL.

I was wondering if there are kind of scholarships offered by the RAF to serving personnel enabling them to learn to fly.(powered)

I know about the flying scholarships for civvys and the malcoms award for gliding as I was awarded a Malcoms award after attending BGC course at Bicester in 2001.

We are posted to Benson in June and I plan to join the station flying club which I imagine will be cheaper than a regular civvy club.

Any info on courses etc would be great.

Are yntirely sure that you are not a journo just looking for a story on how the defence budget is wasted on "perks" for the boys and girls?

If you were a serving airperson you would know where to find this info.

Don't know about scholarships, but remember you can use SLC/ELC for something like this.

If there is a roster of regular posters that take it in turn to posted an expanded and more elaborate version of the above options, then I apologies for not volunteering my services to cover some shifts on here. It looks like there's 24 hr coverage and no shortage of someone being able to post it.

Have no leads I'm afraid but know the flying club at Benson will if there is any. Just wanted to apologies for the ****ty welcome you received on your first post.

I certainly recall some "scholarships" or ppl funding for serving airpersons in the past, as I recommended a Cpl (W) once - but that might have been one just for Waafies (prolly illegal now).

Ask PSF/HRF/Handbrake House/whatever as it should be in DCI/GAI/DIN/whatever .....

Can't you? That's a shame, why not? I was sure I had seen an ad for a flying school in some RAF glossy mentioning SLCs.

Not true. If you look around you will find a flying club that can, and more importantly are willing to, jump through all the necessary hoops.

Lots of folk use ELC towards PPL or more advanced flying training.

Im on MRT and have been told that I cant do my PPL using ELC unless I'm aircrew or just about to leave the service.

Just thought there might be someone here who could give me the answer from personal experence.

I will pop down and see the STDO / Ed Ctr' and see if they know of any courses / scholarships.

Don't forget that there is a flying club at RAF Halton, which also happens to be home to the RAFGSA Centre. Look for gliding AT courses in the Gym or JSP 419.

You would be most welcome at the Benson Flying Club, please make your intial contact by email or by visiting the club in person as some club officals are usualy "away" or overworked and phone calls during the working day are disruptive.

You will find that Benson are the least expensive of the RAF clubs.
