Hello All

Can anyone recommend an outfit for mobile home/camper van rental in New Zealand? Crew rate?

Thanks in advance

Can't recommend anyone but have just spent 3 weeks touring in a car staying in motels. Whilst researching campers a number available seemed to have exclusions in the Insurance for gravel roads, I only saw one company that said you could use on all public roads.

If you're doing a long trip I'd consider buying a secondhand camper and putting it on sale again when you finish your trip:ok:

Depends how much luxury you want, but these were all over WA when we were there a few months ago. Despite the graffiti they looked like new vans.

Google Standby Relocations, I think the website is something like standbyreloc.com or something. Basically, they have on there motorhomes and cars that need relocating to various parts of NZ, the dates they need them in the particular city and where you need to pick up along with how many days you have to deliver it....you pay $5 dollars a day plus petrol. You can contact them direct as well if you have specific dates etc, used it once, was easy and cheap. And no, I dont work for them!:ok:

I've always used Maui. Great service. Crew rates depend on the season. Dont expect to get a discount if you are going to WoW (wings over wanaka) in Easter.

Try Stiles down in Christchurch, they even throw in 5 kg's of lamb chops, if you rent a 54' for a week.

Mrs Guava and me had idea to do this campervan trip two years ago, but found no availability at reasonable price. So we took our tent and this was was nicely cleaned and fumigated by Auckland customs. We rented a saloon car for one month from Auckland , drove to the airport hypermarket where we picked up discount camping equipment , cold box , etc and “did” pretty much all of North Island. We pitched our tent in motorcamps using the tactically placed car to block other vehicles from inadvertently running over our tent in the night. We met interesting people while cooking in the motorcamp cookhouses. We drove a long way and the speed and gas mileage of the car was far better than that of a camper van.
Had a great time at reasonable cost in an expensive country.
I Just thought I would mention this for consideration as a good alternative to the campervan idea.

A book that I've found very useful over the last month is
"Explore New Zealand" by John Cobb.

I found Motels to be the most reasonable accomodation (85-140 NZ$) and suspect renting a cheap car or buying one and selling it cheap on departing plus using motels is the cheapest option without restrictions.:ok:

I used standby relocs before, but suggest avoiding them as they did not pay back the deposit as stated. Nonetheless, here are a few suggestions if you are flexible and can go the relocation route. Can't beat $1/day!
